Just got a Kindle.

I just ordered a case from Oberon.

I had been using the standard Amazon (non-lighted) case but started having battery problems--the battery level would start off with a full charge but would start going down (by about a quarter over an hour or two) without any usage, and with the wifi off.

I thought I had a bad battery but after some googling I found that a good number of people reported that it was the non-lighted case that was causing problems!

This sounded like hooey to me, but so many people were reporting it that I decided to take the Kindle out of the case to see if there was any difference... Guess what--no case, no more battery drain.

Apparently the little clips that hold the Kindle in place are making contact with something inside the Kindle and I assume shorting something which is what causes the problem. Amazon seems to be aware of the problem--they've stopped selling the non-lighted case.

Just thought I'd share in case anyone else with one of those cases is having problems--something to try (even if you're skeptical like I was).

Amazon will refund you on that non-lighted case according to what I have read.

Does anyone know anything about the link on Amazon whereby they notify publishers of an interest in a Kindle version of a book that is currently unavailable in that format?

I wonder how many notifications are required to make the Publisher become interested. And, most of all, is there any resistance from Publishers in converting as many books as possible.

I've wondered about this myself. Part of me thinks it's just a button to make you feel good (like the clitoris, but easier to find with the lights off). When you think about it, why wouldn't they want to convert all their books? If there's this big market of e-reader people that you could be selling books to, why not just do it? Is publishing e-books expensive or a huge pain in the butt?

People are paranoid about pirating due to the greater facility of copying digital media versus physical media. (Hope that made sense. I'm incredibly tired right now.)

BTW, I finally made it to a hotspot today and downloaded my book. Once I had wifi the download was easy. I just opened the app and the book downloaded all by itself.

I suspect that it's largely due to needing new deals with authors. While I'm sure every new contract includes e-book publishing (either to include or exclude), older contracts probably didn't and I would think that new contracts have to be executed to cover that.

Yes, and I imagine the success of E-Readers last Christmas means Amazon is going to commit more time and money into it, but it's certainly going to take a while.
One the other hand, I'd wager that new books without e-book equivalents are going to become very rare.

Well, every book needs an editor, the digital equivalent of a layout person/copy editor, as another person pointed out you need to negotiate a contract, all to compete with the thousands to tens of thousands of copies of the book selling for a few bucks in used book stores. And that's if they are lucky enough that they (still) have it in a digital format, otherwise add OCR scanning/input into the price.

All these people are currently engaged with current projects in house. It's not like the staff is just lolling around, drinking gin in the afternoon, just hoping for some work to come through their door. There isn't really anyone available to start tackling the huge back catalog, or whatever they call it.

I know an author who has a few books out and his editor is talking about digital versions. They've been talking for a year, I did some layout on the Kindle for them to show how it's done, but the editor wants to go for the Nook because apparently it has much better layout control (n.b. this is for poetry, which has rather strict layout requirements).

For what it's worth, starting with a word document, I turned a 500 page book into a Kindle book in about 8 hours or so. That was to get it to 'usable by me' format - it's still ugly. No TOC, layout all messed up still, etc.

I mean, it's obviously not some overwhelming effort and cost (especially compared to the normal editing cycle), but it's time consuming and uses labor resources which aren't readily available. I'm sure as the learning curve continues things can become much more streamlined, with very powerful automatic conversion tools, etc.

I suspect that over time we will see hugely popular authors converted over (if they acquiesce - a lot are virulently opposed to digital books), and the rest will have to wait for Project Gutenberg once the copyright lapse. I wonder if things like University and high school lit courses will start exerting pressure to get the 'greats' translated. Right now people like Tobias Wolff, Raymond Carver, etc., are heavily taught, but not available on Kindle. (well, look at that - Tobias Wolff is on Kindle now, but still not Carver)

Now I'm rambling - but I bought Raymond Carver's biography in paperback, the first physical book I've bought since the Kindle. I'm hating the reading experience. Heavy, hurts my hands to keep it held open, can't change the font size depending on whether I have my reading glasses on or not, can't search for things in the book or online, etc., etc. I declare: the book is dead. Long live the book!

Thanks Roger, that's very interesting insight. Can you explain why many authors are anti-digital - is it a legal/financial matter or just a luddite/anti-technology thing?

If it helps, I love my Oberon. It is actually, aesthetically, much more appealing than shown on the site. The leather is very thick, and easily protects my Kindle, while giving it an old-book feel. There was some concern, even noted by Oberon, over the bottom straps cover the buttons (Up arrow and Back), but perhaps they’ve adjusted their pattern, because neither strap touches the buttons. The clasp that holds the book closed is a very nice piece, and Oberon included extra bungee-cords, should this one fray and break.

I think I've decided to get an Oberon case now (with postage, it is pretty much exactly the same price as the Amazon case with light), but now I have to choose which one. :) I'm currently leaning towards the Celtic Hounds in green.

ETA: Ok, if I don't go for the cheapest shipping option, which can take 3 weeks, the price is a bit more, and there's the risk of incurring extra charges at customs (VAT and handling), but I think I'll still order one.

I struggled with choosing which one. Seriously, it took me an incredibly long amount of time to make that decision. Originally, I had liked the “World Tree” in green, as it had a very Tolkien-esque feel to it. But I was also very tempted by the Celtic Hounds in green, as you mentioned, and the “Medici” in chocolate.

A few others certainly caught my attention, but in the end I decided to go with my first instinct, and satiate my concern over choosing “wrong” with the thought that I could always get another cover later on down the line. The cover I have turned out to be even better when it arrived, and much softer to the touch than I had anticipated. I am completely satisfied with it.

I can attest that they generally ship much faster than they advertise. As for customs, here's hoping you don't get charged.
