Continuation Part 2 - Discussion of the Amanda Knox case

In the book "Monster of Perugia", Mark Waterbury turns the prosecution's favorite phrase "is compatible with" against them.

The PMF and TrueJustice sites are compatible with the the intents of the prosecution, J. Kercher's lawsuit, and the Nazis.

That famous phrase when used in the witch trials against Amanda and the accused warlock Raffaele, meant that "it might be possible that".

What happened to Amanda during her interrogation is totally compatible with Amanda's description of the interrogation.

What happened with the PMF site is compatible with being hacked. Perhaps it has been put out of its' misery.

Maybe a little bit of rest that they're getting right now will help them realize how lost they are. No?

Well it was only a matter of time before Godwin's Law was invoked.

Also from "The Monster of Perugia":

PM Giuliano Mignini demanded that not only should Amanda receive a sentence of life in prison, but that it begin with nine months of complete isolation during daylight hours; solitary confinement. Nine months without contact with people, while looking forward to spending the rest of her life in prison.

Psychiatrists who have studied solitary confinement have said that "...many - including some who did not become overtly psychiatrically ill during their confinement in solitary - will likely suffer permanent harm as a result of such confinement."

If that's true, then Mignini's punishment should be compatible with the punishment of the Nuremberg trials.

LOL @ "accused warlock Raffaele"--is that one yours? :)

However on the latter, were that true that would mean dozens of PMFers would swarm madly like homeless bees to other venues to discuss the case, would that be preferable to you? I think everyone needs a home, and no one ever accused me of being a bleeding heart. :p

They're just down for repairs, Clander is updating the software or somesuch. Michael is apparently not happy, talking about hijackings and 'one click of the mouse' but then again it's tough to tell sometimes when he's joking.

I love your excerpts! I especially like the one you've chosen for today, as that's something kinda scary about the Italian Court System, that they can get away with nonsense like that. Machiavelli once said, as you quote from Dr. Waterbury, that 'compatible' in Italian legal parlance basically means 'possible.' Massei's favorite phrase from his Motivations Report was something akin to 'It's possible, indeed probable' and that just drove me to distraction reading his report, and at that time I thought 'compatible' was a lot more tightly defined than just 'possible.'

As you note when you employ reductio ad absurdum, you can basically prove just about anything that way. If you let someone start with 'possible' and blithely move to 'probable' in just two short words then they've 'won' the argument before it has even begun. Maybe I'm a tease, but I require a little courting known as 'argument' and 'evidence' before I'll let someone get that far with me! :p

I think Maresca had something to do with that as well. His job in the Italian System, according to the Italian familiar with their legal system at IIP, as the voice of the victim(s) is to extract vengeance, to ensure the maximum possible penalty through accumulating 'aggravating circumstances' and opposing any 'mitigating circumstances.' As has been noted on this board, the financial sums awarded don't amount to anything in the vast majority of cases, thus that is what they usually do.

Did you read that Berlusconi is pushing for the right of people to sue judges for miscarriages of justice?

"If passed by lawmakers, the reforms approved by Berlusconi's Cabinet Thursday would allow judges to be sued by citizens for miscarriage of justice."

If that's true, then Mignini's punishment should be compatible with the punishment of the Nuremberg trials.

So the prosecutor of Amanda Knox should get the same punishment as the architects of a war that resulted in the deaths of about 65 million people.

The cult of Amanda Knox is begining to crack.

Perhaps you're missing his 'theme for the day,' what wonders can be conjured with the notion 'is compatible with.' :)

Just the fissures before the explosion. The history of Mignini's crimes and attempted crimes makes one feel like exploding. Does Mignini influence the appeal in any way?

Perhaps you're missing his 'theme for the day,' what wonders can be conjured with the notion 'is compatible with.' :)

Thanks Kaosium. That's compatible with what I was saying.

Kaosium,

And then there is the phrase "not incompatible with," which I guess is one notch lower than "compatible." Neither one means anything unless you also know what counts as incompatible. MOO.

I'm sure you'll take care that, unlike Goring, no one sneaks Mignini cyanide the night before your kangaroo court hangs him.

[Paraphrased] Amanda was asked to imagine that she was there and asked what she heard.

If you ask me to imagine what I'd like to see others do, then your answer is compatible with the future I'd like to see for Mignini.

As much as I'd like to see Mignini punished, I don't enjoy seeing people punished. I just want to see Amanda and Raffaele freed and compensated.

What the heck is this topic and why won't it ever go away? The wikipedia article provides nothing. Seriously, 45,000 replies is more than the Loose Change thread received. How the hell could there be this much material or background to even discuss on this topic? Could someone please give me some idea what this utterly immortal argument is about?

Most of the last 23,000 posts are just regurgitated stuff from the first 23,000 posts.

A murdered girl, a cartwheel, police who announce they don't need no stinkin' evidence to just know someone is guilty, a second story man, Harry Potter books, defendants who don't clock watch, police who don't clock watch either, olives, 12" vs. 6", bleach, no bleach, cat's blood, rock throwing, Toto, Nara's ears, 3 out of 4 computer hard drives destroyed, sex, lies, missing video tapes, press gone wild, prosecutors gone wild, dirty gloves, a mop (don't forget the bucket), wrapping paper, Amelie (the movie), Manga comics, cell phones-several of them, leaky drains..............and that's just the short list.

Well, to me it is about the railroading of two college students in Perugia, Italy by the corrupt and incompetent police, forensic, prosection team involved. The conversation lingers because people who fell for the prosection's crazy story refuse to see the truth even after all the evidence used against them has been proven false.

EGarrett,

There has been a good deal of new information made available since the convictions in December of 2009. Basically one side thinks that the convictions were sound, and the other sees them as an injustice. We have argued DNA, cell phones, stomach contents, latent blood detection, the physics of breaking a window, plus who knows what else. Heck, you could practically do a general science/technology course just based on this case. Plus, there are RoseMontague's literary allusions. So maybe you could do a lit course....
