The United Nations and Libya (Quadaffi)

It's interesting that all the European nations who view the US as war mongers are blathering hot air, but are very slow to actually step up to the plate of actual military action.

Don't know if the US should take the lead, but we are not at the moment, saying, "Oh yeah? You go do it."


New news of the day, Saudi Arabia's buttressing the dictatorship in Bahrain, and Iran's rattling its sword, saying, "Hold on there, partner!"

Russia, China and Germany prefer Daffy in charge. The "international community" has spoken.
 
UN just passed a No FLy Zone resolution.
Feeling is that Kahddafy's "Bengazi is a City of Traitors" remark yesterday made him so toxic that even Russia and China don't want to support him.
 
To date it seems that the Libyan government had being restrained in the use of force, either because its soldiers or the government were unwilling to use the type of force that would kill many civilians.

I would not be surprised if Libyan soldiers - knowing they now have been branded as war criminals and are the legitimate targets of western missiles - if they had been unwilling to use heavy force will lose that inhibition, since they know their own casualties are going to climb heavily. What is the point of being restrained, if the only reward is to be killed?

The other outcome would be the Libyan army would try and move as many militaryassets into Benghazzi and Misrata as soon as possible as soon it may be difficult to move between cities. And then we can experience the joy of all out urban warfare.

Alternatively, the Libyan army might be hit by mass desertions or simply try and shuffle off Gadaffi - but perhaps it is too late for that. But it seems a hugely unpredictable and risky move, but Western leaders must show their vision and determination to fight Gadaffi to the last drop of Libyan blood.

The UN Resolution also allows UN members to use any mean necessary to protect civilians in Libya.
That means that Khadaffy's ground forces are fair game.

He is facing a hell of a lot more then that since the "Any Means May Be Taken To Protect Civilians" means his whole army is fair game.
It just a case of how long it will take to get the strikes ready.

No. Russia and china are just generaly opposed to the UN getting involved in countries internal affairs. Someone might want to try that on them some time. There is no evidence that they like Gaddafi. If someone overthrew him I can't seem them having any problems dealing with a replacement.

Germany just doesn't want to get involved. Aparently due to a mix of worries over where things will end and not wanting small things like war to get in the way of capitalism.

We are not actualy allowed to invade though. The results from serbia suggests it would be hard to target his armed forces if they stopped advancing.

Gaddafi has now threated to go 'crazy'. Few years late with that. It will be interesting to see how his kids go running the war, I can't believe Gaddafi actually has the brains to run anything now.

Which is a fair enough stance I guess if implemented consistently. In which case I wish they'd voted against. Abstaining reeks of wanting rid of Gaddafi without being seen to take sides or get their hands dirty.

I think this is an awful plan. Even if the principles are correct there is a complete lack of clarity around the objective of what we are trying to achieve.

I'm not sure what has changed the US stance on this.
 
I hear the French Foreign Legion has been rather bored lately...
