Merged 8.8 quake in Sendai, Japan

News channels actually invite real experts and not some bigmouthed JREFers.
Maybe in your country the experts are the only ones who report on the state of the nuclear reactors, but that's certainly not the case in the UK. There are several people on these forums who may not know what the current situation is, but who do know what the possible failures are, and the implications of them. When reports on the media talk about things which simply cannot happen with this type of reactor, then I know who I will tend to believe.

what is the Agenda of Swiss national TV? what is the agenda of German TV stations? what is the agenda of swiss newspapers?

i see no fearmongering, but i also see no downplaying like here on JREF.
I have no idea what the policies on nuclear power are in those countries but it is not beyond the scope of possibility that the news will be in line with those policies.

Here in the UK, the BBC are reporting that there is a problem and a worry but radiation levels are dropping and all measures taken by the Japanese government are purely precautionary. Which seems to be in line with the general consensus on the forum.
Of course the BBC operates in a country that is thinking of developing nuclear power so there is just as much possibility that the BBC's experts will be chosen for being pro nuclear.

Personally I'd rather just follow the evidence and not some bloke on the telly who can't be questioned. Verification is key.

it has nothing to do with scientific knowledge, it is about is the vessel is broken as it was reported by the Japanese Authorities. the news media cannot do anything other than give us the information they get.
nobody is able to take a look at the vessel other than the people actually working at the site. and they reported the vessel was damaged at the last explosion and that radiation levels are rising.
thats the latest news i have been hearing,
but here on JREF some wannabe experts claim, oph its nothing....... the media is fearmongering etc etc. laughable.

Definitively WRONG.

The news media are making it up as they go, from picture of containment vessel without basement ring, far away from reality, or even CARTOON of the plant exloding and ejecting radiation everywhere the news media is *definitively* sexing it up and milking / BILKING this as much as they can.

Ad views for TV.

The more % of viewer they get, the more expansicve they can sell advertising slots.

Simply direct sales for news paper.

As for the expert on TV, pleeeeasssse. When an expert start by saying this is as bad as chernobyl, he imemdiately shows he is NOT an expert.

Yes indeed they made it up.

Show me expert saying that this catastrophe is as bad as chernobyl and the fukushima reactor can explode and make a flash reaction like chernoyl. Please.

Even that german guy you cited did not go as far as that.

OH and by the way , accusing the people of being "conspiracy theorist" is apparently the new insult used to stop *ALL* debate on this forum. Congratulation on your ad hominem.

there are no commercials on the swiss News Channel. and it is pretty much pro nuclear.

so much for your conspiracy theory......

just like truthers lol

they guy you called a cry wolf without you ever having heard of him before, yeah that was very funny and telling. expected more from you

How long does cooling take in normal circumstances and under the contingency measures being used now? I've heard "days" but that's kind of vague.

Re: cesium and iodine. How dangerous is that stuff? What generates it at the reactor and do we have any idea how much has been released?

Is hydrogen generation a probelm throughout the entire cooling process or is there a point where the temperature falls low enough that it's no longer a concern?

How radioactive does the seawater used in cooling become?

Thanks.

nice strawmen.
it is about is the vessel seriously damaged or not?
all the news i heard, made it clear, they rely on other news reports. as noone is able to take a look, only those operating the plant..........

they only speculation about it is actually here on JREF where some say, its nothing........

you guys are amuzing if the situation was not so sad (earthquake and zunami)

Re: cesium and iodine. How dangerous is that stuff? What generates it at the reactor and do we have any idea how much has been released?
...

Well this much I can say. The problem with iodine is not the level of radiation but the fact that it is taken up by the body and stays there. Hence the pills which reduce iodine takeup. Taking those otherwise harmless pills is a sensible precaution even if the risk of an event is quite low.
