Merged 8.8 quake in Sendai, Japan

What I find remarkable is the amount of fires there are when an earthquake of this size hits Japan. Just like then one in Kobe (as I remember it) there are fires everywhere. Even in the tsunami itself.
In contrast I can't remember seeing a fire on the news from the New Zealand earthquake.

Of course my memory can be faulty.

It is being reported that there are a number of significant aftershocks, 5.0 range. Also, a dam has given way, washing a town away. Can't recall the name. 88,000 people are reported missing in Japan.

Awful. The scale. Just awful. :(

Local TV here in Sacramento are showing the usual idiots who are gathering at Ocean Beach in San Francisco to watch the waves come in.
Crescent City, on the North Coast and the Westernmost point in California, is getting a lot of media attention since it was the last California city to suffer major Tsunami damage from the Alaske quake in 1964.There a manadatory evacuation is in effect.
I lived through the 1989 Lomo Priata Quake, but it was nothing like this. There are going to be a LOT of Aftershocks.

It won;t be long before the 2012 Is The End morons to jump on this tragedy as a sing of what is to come.........

I didn't think about going over to David Icke forums to see what the nutjobs were saying, but as something big and tragic was happening In The Real World it seems worse than callous.

CNN Live has a feed from Seal Beach, San Francisco. One person with a dog on the beach.
I hope the dog makes it. http://www.cnn.com/video/flashLive/live.html?stream=stream1

Looks like the tsunami at Hawaii topped around 2 m. I have a relative there who's OK, and it doesn't sound like anything significant.

Japan is an entirely different, and terrible, story. My sympathy and prayers for the people there. At least they are about as well-prepared and well-built for such events as any nation can be, but it's still pretty awful.

Looks as though the West Coast of the US will not get hit by any strong Tsunami action, the main thrust seems to be headed South.

From BBC just now --

1706: The Tokyo Electric Power Company has said the pressure inside the No. 1 reactor at its Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant has been rising, with the risk of a radiation leak, according to the Jiji Press news agency. Tepco planned to take measures to release the pressure, the report added. The reactor's cooling system began to malfunction after the earthquake. People living close to the plant were later evacuated as a precaution.

1708: Nuclear physicist Dr Walt Patterson tells the BBC it sounds like there is a "serious problem" at the Fukushima-Daiichi plant. "It's the sort of thing that nuclear engineers have nightmares about," he says. "If it is not resolved in the next few hours it will get serious. If the core is uncovered, then those rods at the top may get hot enough to melt themselve
