Until then, save money, and don't execute.

nah, save money by speeding up the appeals and execution process while insisting on better police and prosecutors work and NOT pushing for the death penalty unless your absolutely sure of guilt.

Take for example the killers of Dr. William Petit's family in CT and the two men who sexually assaulted, tortured and killed his wife and two daughters in a brutal home invasion.

You want them to have taxpayer funded housing, entertainment, education and food for the rest of their lives.

I'd rather that than have my government (not actually American but you get the idea) kill them.

I have absolutely no problem whatsoever with stating now, and any time in the future that I am absolutely 100% disgusted with the idea of my or any government killing people in the name of justice. If the alternative is to feed, clothe and house them, providing them with education and some basic entertainment then I'm absolutely all for it, because they aren't being put to death.

No government should be allowed to terminate it's own citizens unless it is pretty much absolutely unavoidable (a possible example could be during a shootout with the police).

As ever I am always astonished when proponents of "small government" who are against the "government grabbing powers" are so willing to give the government the right to kill them.

Anyway back to the main topic of the thread - good to see one more place becoming more civilised and the state's powers being reduced.

Yeah, well, too bad. Until the system becomes infalible, there is an unacceptable risk that an innocent man might be killed top satisfy you petty malice.

the reason that a prior Governor of Illinois commuted all the existing death sentences was that about b25% were not not guilty, as shown by scientific evidence, and there was no way to be sure about the rest of them.

I just see it as a rare example of Republicons living up to their claims of religious devotion.

Why does deepatrax 'want them dead'? To protect society from them, or because they did bad things and should therefore have bad things done to them? If the former, then incarceration works just as well. If the latter, vigilantism.

I'm with Deepatrax on this. We should just kill all the prisoners, who cares if a few hundred were wrongfully convicted? Most of them are poor people and brown people anyway.

Then some upstarts in a colony got the idea that Justice ought to involve proportional punishment and an independent judiciary and that prisoners are innocent until proven guilty and that everybody has inalienable rights.
