Iran threatens to boycott olympics over "racist" logo

Iran have protested against the already controversial logo of the 2012 Olympic Games, saying the emblem is racist and spells the word "Zion," the ILNA news agency reported on Monday.

"The use of the word Zion by the designer of Olympics logo ....in the emblem of the Olympics Games 2012 is a very revolting act," he added, warning that if Rogge did not act the logo would "affect the participation of several countries, especially like Iran which insists on following principles and values."

No kidding! They could have just had a contest among school children and come up with something just as good for far, far less. Much like the Chicago vehicle sticker design.

The British Olympic organisers do pretty much have a blank cheque - no extravagance too big when you've got about 9billion to play with.

What they should have done is have a national competition for designs, voted for by the public to a final shortlist and then judged by some relevant image experts.... it would have been essentially free, would have generated loads of publicity, would have engaged the public and would have ended up with a much better logo than the dross we've got stuck with....

Oh well.

I'm glad the article explained what the logo was supposed to be, I wouldn't have seen it. I don't think it looks like "2012" or "Zion". I think it looks like the original design got crumpled up when it was being faxed somewhere, and someone mistook it for intentional, and everybody involved is too embarrassed to admit it.

Dis you ever forget to do your homework and quickly scribble it up while waiting for the schoolbus, as your friends harrass you because they know what you are doing? That's how I see this Logo coming about - the designers woke up one morning and realized they had forgotten that the presentation was that day.

Makes you wonder where the committee members who chose it partied the night before.

And, that's it.

Whilst I wouldn't wish for one second to denigrate men's freestyle wrestling, i think the Olympics will be able to cope without its athletic integrity being too greatly harmed by an Iranian boycott.
