I searched for the name Nancy Genovese here and could not find anything, so I am (probably) incorrectly thinking that this subject has never been raised.

http://www.longislandlawyerblog.com...ing-pictures-of-tourist-attraction-at-airport

In short, a woman, who happens to be a Glen Beck fan, was arrested for taking a photograph of a tourist attraction at an airport (ans subsequent events all triggered according to the article by Police actions, and not Ms Genovese. She was also carrying a rifle (unloaded) and $13,000 in cash.

The article above is extremely "pro Nancy" whereas every6thing else I have glanced at is "anti Nancy". There appears to be very little objective comment around.

The upshot of the matter is she is now suing Town of Southampton, the County of Suffolk, Lieutenant Iberger, Undersheriff Caracappa, Deputy Carlock, Lieutenant Leuete, and various other employees of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department.for $US70 Million, and apparently Southhampton has defaulted in it's response.

Has anybody here followed this story, and if so, can they provide a more objective view of the events that happened?

Norm?

False dichotomy.

Anyway, since the town failed to defend the lawsuit, there hasn't been any clarification of the differing stories. If the police officers actually breached her Fourth Amendment and Miranda rights, then they're in serious trouble, even if she had been doing something wrong - which point was never established.

I am more interested in the original story rather than the current situation on it (with which I am familiar). The Blog I quoted is extremely biased towards Ms Genovese. Other stuff I have read suggests that she is a gun toting right wing evangalist who only follows FOX, wants to be a Tea Partyiest when she grows up (although she is 57) and is of the Lunar Right.

I really would like to see a dispassionate analysis of what went on that day. And from what I have found on the Web to date, such a beast does not appear to exist.

This is an interesting council meeting where the deputy attorney makes excuses and another says it's no big deal that the case was not properly replied to by the city. From my experience, default judgements like this are never upheld, especially not for 70 million. One councilman is really pissed. The city is using a death of someone's mother as the excuse for not filing some papers. OTOH, attorneys failing to file have cost cities big bucks before. But in the end of the video, it sounds like a response was filed within the proper 'last chance' time frame. There's still the one councilman who continues to badger the deputy attorney. Bottom line, it is misleading to say the default judgement was found. It wasn't.

Fire Dog Lake has some additional information.

Glenn Beck Fan Busted for Casing National Guard Base
Genovese is a Glenn Beck fan, according to her MySpace page ( http://bit.ly/… and archived at http://www.webcitation.org/… ). "He is mad as hell and so are we. He is right and so are we", writes Genovese, who also posted a video of a Glenn Beck rant.

Genovese additionally posted an amateur video indicating her apparent affinity for right-wing militia movements.

Just look at her MySpace page — and in case that’s wiped, here’s the archived version. She’s convinced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency is evil (and not because of the rotten job it did under Bushes One and Two). FEMA FEMA FEMA! (And like Michele Bachmann, she’s not fond of census takers, either. Or health care reform.)

At last report, she was being held for psychiatric observation after going "berzerk" in the courtroom. A picture of Ms. Genovese, as well as the picture of what she had stashed in her trunk (see above) can be found at the Southampton Press‘ story on this incident.

Oh, and check out her Twitter page. Yes, she’s a tea bagger, too.
There are embedded links in the story.

What is it you think happened, Fromdownunder? It doesn't sound like someone just taking pictures. It sounds like someone acting very suspiciously with a rifle and lots of ammo in plain sight in the car when the police checked out the suspicious activity.

Maybe because she was a gun toting right wing evangelist. Ever think of that?

Thanks! That helps a helluva lot. Not.

Has it has occured to anybody that I am simply after information here? I do not have any agenda at all, and am simply seeking facts, or as near to facts as can be obtained in this case. And so far, from the "I love Nancy" to the "I hate Nancy" sites, all I have seen is rhetoric. And from the post I quoted here, this seems to be all that anybody is willing to provide.

I haven't read much about the story, and I don't watch Beck, though I have certainly seen and heard him.

I do wonder about the wording regarding the guns and the ammo, though. Sounds sensationalist for what lots of people probably have. "Arsenal" "Assault" "Cache" etc...

I frequently have way more than 500 rounds and 2 guns in my car. There's nothing unusual about that, and she apparently was not charged with anything regarding those guns or ammo. I too am sometimes traveling to or from a shooting range, or a friend's property where I shoot my guns, and thus have an "arsenal" and a "cache" in my vehicle.

I also frequently take pictures of airplanes at airports. So far, I have never had the guns and ammo in the car at the same time, but I do wonder what would be written about me if I were arrested while enjoying my photography and airplane hobbies.

It seems clear that a few JREF members think I should be jailed or worse, simply for enjoying my hobbies.

The black bag probably has somewhere around 2-3,000 rounds in it for the various pistols. It's pretty well stuffed full of ammo boxes. Each of the bricks of .22LR ammo is 500 rounds. There are probably 4-5,000 rounds total in the pictures.

And these pics don't even show most of the (assault) rifles...or their ammo.

Not necessarily. I just hope no one ever steals your case of guns from your car and then kills someone with one of them.

Well, the guns are never left unattended in the car.

I just hope the hypothetical guy who stole the gun and killed someone isn't on parole for his 28th felony..., because you can't sue a judge...

Unfortunately, that's often the case.

I'm not criticizing you for asking, and I'm the first one to look at the motive behind a citation before accepting the evidence as credible.

My point was, however, sometimes one side is right. Just because things are presented in the media and on the Web as controversies that supposedly have two sides, often the reality is the division is 90:10 not 50:50.

What hobby, pray tell, involves taking pictures at airports and carrying around such an arsenal, let alone owning one. Are you afraid some one is going to attack you or take away your freedom?

Are you referring to me? I don't have such a hobby.

If it's the woman in question, how did 2 guns in their cases get to be an arsenal? Ammo is commonly sold in 500 or 1,000 round boxes/cases. You get a much better price. 2 guns and 1,000 rounds is not unusual at all, and only an inexperienced person, or a headline writer, or a prosecutor, would refer to it as an arsenal or a cache.

If I were to buy ammo, it would almost certainly be a 500 round brick or a 1,000 round case.

If I were to have my weapons and ammo in the car at the airport, it would be because I forgot to take them out of the car...

Like school students who get arrested during hunting season, and end up with a police record for the rest of their lives.

As far as the rest, it's none of your damn business why I own what I own or what I do with it. :D

When I break the law, feel free to make a complaint.

If you wish to have a civil discussion instead of an accusatory one, I'll oblige you. But, given your history here at JREF, I won't wait around for long. :D

Nancy Genovese - Innocent Victim or Right Wing Teabagger?

Why are the two options presented as being mutually exclusive?

Why are the two options presented as being mutually exclusive?

Mainly because that is all I seem to be able to find on the web. You are either for her (the Blog in the first link of my OP), or against her (everything else I clicked on)

Which is why I thought I would ask here to see if anybody actually knew of more balanced information.

Are you referring to me?
I was referring to your post about your arsenal you described as your "hobbies". You brought it up complete with pictures.

If it's nobody's business why did you bring is up? And as far as the discussion goes, you are using your arsenal and your "hobbies" to make the claim this is normal behavior. Perhaps your explanation of what these said hobbies are could shed some light on the normalcy of your arsenal.

In regards to the "civil discussion" I asked a civil question. Apparently you feel defensive. I'm not surprised.

And of course you just came from your local bank branch which was closing, and asked you to kindly hold onto $13,000 while they got new locks.

While I think the 'arsenal' is being made too much a big deal of, that doesn't mean her actions were not suspicious. They could be done innocently, but it seems her actions were not so innocent.

I don't have enough information to make a call obviously, but I wouldn't be too surprised either way. Or both. She could be a dangerous anti-government insurgent wanna be who was also illegally harassed.

Oh, and I still don't like Berettas, but that stainless Ruger looks mighty fine.

As far as the topic is concerned, my personal belief is that the Blog first mentioned in my OP (the first link) is mostly ********, and just crying to a superior Court. I really cannot accept that much of anything suggested in the Blog really happened.
