Merged Discussion of the moon landing "hoax"

Thanks for the information :)
After reading it....it seems the only experiment/package still working is the mirrors. Were the other experiments/packages suppose to work for a long period of time? :boggled:

The "mirrors", known as the lunar ranging retroreflectors, were separate packages from the ALSEPs.

The ALSEPs were active multimode science observatories, which were set up by the astronauts and included experiments connected by cables to a central station which included control, command & telemetry, and radio communications, and was itself connected to the SNAP-27 radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG). These experiments spanned up to about a hundred meters when deployed. The ALSEPs had a design lifetime of about one year, except for the last one; the A17 ALSEP had a two-year design life.

As matt.tansy noted, they were really shut down for bandwidth [ETA: and budgetary] purposes; they were still cranking away, though various experiments had failed here and there. Shutting them down primarily meant turning off the transmitters; some experiments had failed or been turned off already, some were set to standby. Intermittent monitoring after the Sep 30, 1977 shutdown continued for a while with the A17 and A15 ALSEPs; A15's transmissions halted about a year later.

A proposal to talk to at least one of the ALSEPs to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Apollo in 1994 was shelved when an analysis by Fairchild showed that the power supplies had degraded to the point where the central stations were no longer operating. (The design of the RTGs was optimized for higher power over a shorter operational period, so they didn't last as long as, say, the Voyagers' RTGs.) Interestingly, the only place left that still had the right equipment to communicate with them was one of the tracking stations in Chile.

Trivia fun fact: there are still "live" grenades on the Moon in at least one of the ALSEP seismology experiments.

Forgot to add to the above post: if you are interested in the ALSEPs, you can read about the system in detail in the ALSEP Flight System Familiarization Manual, rev. B, and about their performance and a summary of scientific results in the ALSEP Termination Report.

Note: Both are PDF scans, the first about 20 MB and the second about 10 MB. You might want to pack a lunch; they total over 500 pages of rather dense text and diagrams.

Thanks for the infor....what is amazing is the live grenades :jaw-dropp . I wonder what would it take in order for them to "go off".

500 pages....:eye-poppi..yes indeed a lunch and dinner will be packed. :) Thanks for the link I will check it out.

Your URLs simply go to the NASA search page, not to the manuals themselves. The search server does not appear to have a way to reference an individual record directly via a URL

Here are the direct URLs for the PDF files:

They're all in on it! :D

How'd the moon get there? Huh?

How'd it get there?

How'd it get there?

How'd the moon get there?

How'd it get there?

Therefore, hoax.

A catalog of all the lunar samples returned by Apollo and Luna. Clicking on a sample will open a PDF with detailed information, often including in situ photographs of the sample and, if applicable, lists of scientific papers written about the sample.

Lunar Samples

Go on. Tell me all these people were in on it.

If you insist. All those people are in on it.

Captain Swoop - Great find!

However, I can see the CT'ers already setting up a new phase of Moon Hoaxing....

If you read the list, you find names like Anders, Duke, Evans, Schmidt and Engel.

All names (or nearly) of Apollo Astronauts!

Conspiracy!!

Clearly NASA wanted to keep the total number as low as possible - cheapskates!

:)
