Bob Marley Day

February 6, 2011

WHEREAS Robert Nesta Marley was born on February 6, 1945, and in his 36 years created a legacy of socially observant music which continues to inspire hope and acceptance around the world.

Bob Marley's brand of reggae music, both powerful and distinct, captivated people of all cultures and continues to be instantly recognizable around the world. His profound influence on the musical and cultural landscape earned him a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and changed the history of popular music.

Through his music, Bob Marley became an advocate for human rights and an international ambassador for peace. His courage to speak out against oppression, poverty, slavery and apartheid earned him a Peace Medal of the Third World from the United Nations and the Order of Merit from his home country of Jamaica.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor Rob Ford, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim February 6, 2011 as "Bob Marley Day" and join with citizens of Toronto to salute a great musician and humanitarian.

Mayor Rob Ford

Isn't it "doobie"? A "dube" sounds like some sort of feco-rectal lubricant.

At any rate, I approve (as an American, which is worth like 4 Canadian approvals).

The GTA's version of a Teabagger declaring Bob Marley Day?

Perhaps he's compensating for inviting the waste of skin we call Don Cherry to make an ass of himself at the inaugural meeting of the new Toronto City Council session a couple of months ago.

Mr Ford should make Bob Marley Day more than just a token gesture paying lip service to the great man. I propose that on Bob Marley Day Toronto's smoking ban should be lifted, enabling all Toronto's residents and visitors to skin up legally, put tobacco in their joints, smoke them where they damn well please and exhale.

I think Bob would approve and it would demonstrate that the mayor felt a kinship with Bob Marley and what he stood for, because I'm sure this couldn't be simply an exercise in popularity before the next mayoral election.
