South Korean navy stops pirates.

I hear they beat the snot out of them actually - Even the US navy SEALS wanted their autographs lol

The Somalis should give up piracy, and grow corn instead. They could sell it to passing ships, at the rate of one U.S. Dollar per cob—in other words, a buck an ear.

They had no problem paying the Taliban when Christian missionaries were being held back in 2007.

Anyway, props to the S. Koreans. All them PC방's and hours of CS are starting to pay off.

I don't get why everyone aint armed. AK aint that expensive.

The excuses I heard most often are liability, training and trusting the crew with weapons. It all comes down to money. A very small percentage of cargo shipped is lost to pirates.

First belly laugh of the morning, when all I wanted to do was wallow in self-pity!
Love it!

This joke is why you were suspended, wasn't it?:D

Glad you brought that up. I direct you to my thread here:
Easy solution to the pirate problem...

Of course the anti gun nuts were opposed to it. They would rather take the risk with the pirates

It is my understanding that the pirates are fishermen driven to criminality due to poverty. Maybe that's a problem worth looking into, I dunno.

Your understanding is wrong. There are poor countries all over the globe, and Somalia was dirt-poor before they started their relatively recent piracy kick. So why piracy only now, and mostly just in Somalia?

Maybe that's a problem worth looking into, I dunno.

Nope, not worth looking into. This is the result of two things: Somalia is a failed state which cannot enforce laws within its borders, and some groups have been paying off the pirates when their ships get captured. The former problem doesn't seem tractable. The latter could be changed..

Sorry, but no. It's always a bad idea to reward criminal activity with niceness. Sends a message to others who might wish to become criminal. Besides, if they only took the ships and freely released safely all passengers I would be slightly less negative (I have to stress ONLY SLIGHTLY) towards them.
My preference now is blow up any of their larger, more obvious ports and mine their harbor/shore areas as heavilly as possible. And, send secured vessels out as bait, blow out the hulls of their ships as they approach, pull them out of the water if still alive, bind them hand and foot and toss them overboard.

I enjoy fake pirate stuff. I do not care what motivates real ones. Notice, by the by, that when pirate movies are made, the pirates are usually honorable, wronged gentlemen who only invade to save good people or get the bad guys. Misleads a lot. Ain't reality_ they are just murderous thieves.

They tried this in WW1. Look up Q-ships. It failed as too many were able to cross the ocean without being attacked.

Ways to make the ships more secure is
1. Put extra sailers on board to keep an extra lookout for pirates. If any approach then use water cannon maybe with something added (e.g. pepper) to discourage the pirates.
2. The pirates prefer ships that are easy to climb. So put netting or barbed wire on the side of the ship so that it is harder to board.
3. If pirates are seen approaching send out a distress signal. Then a navy warship can approach and use its heavy guns.

One major problem is that the pirates use small, fast boats that are very hard to spot by radar.

An even easier method would be to put concertina wire around the ships. That would make it extremely difficult to board.

I assume your suspension was for that pun.

I gotta feeling it would be cheaper to arm the crew than to secure c-wire. But hey, why not both? I imagine it would have to be wire made to stand up to salt spray. I don't know if the MILSURP is up to it. Possibly. Also I imagine that it would have to be heavier gauge or it would get thrashed and all tangled up in the wind.

That would be a cool looking boat.

But that may be a problem. That might attract more attention to the boat then it normally would have gotten. Like rendering military courtesy to an Officer while in sector.

Would that add considerable weight to a commercial vessel? I doubt it would be much of the total percentage but it may be worth more in cargo and overhead than to not have the wire at all.

Remember the pirates must first see the ship, which may be close to the horizon. It may be hard to see any special wire or rope around the ship except at close quarter.
