First we learned that Ahmadinejad got "spanked" for talking about more freedoms and trying to ease the restrictions on the Iranian Press...

And now this:

The cable, which the AP says was made public on Tuesday by WikiLeaks, makes clear that while Ahmadinejad was keen to hammer out some sort of agreement with the parties involved, the Iranian president “faced internal pressures from hard-liners who viewed it as a ‘virtual defeat,’” which ultimately killed any chances of a successful outcome. Source

So were we all wrong and Ahmadinejad actually is the sane voice of Iran? :p

[Although you could argue that Ahmadinejad says stupid things, but then again ... Palin, Lieberman, Paul, Huckabee ... ]

Also, dear Forum Stalkers: Ahmadinejad is not "my friend". Thanks.

No, he's not a sane voice of Iran by any stretch. But it's quite clear that he is not the supreme dictator and there are others more senior to him calling the shots. In particular the Ayatollah Khameinei, the Guardian Council and the Revolutionary Guards.

Of course. Relatively speaking, the nice crazy guy is way better than the bad crazy guys.

Who knows. Perhaps Ahmadinejad is trying to warn us, with all his talk about holocaust denial, the imminent coming of the 7th Imam, and his cryptic remark about the imminent erasure of Israel from the pages of time.

"Help! Help!" Ahmadinejad might be saying. "The Ayatollah, the Guardian Council and the Revolutionary Guards are controlling me, and they're planning to start WWIII! Don't you get it? That's why I cause a mass walkout every time I speak at the U.N.! What does it take to get through to you people?"

Will the West awaken in time? Why bother? If we wait and see, we might awaken some morning to find that we anthropically know the answer, because WWIII either will or will not have occurred. And if the Post-Everett interpretation of quantum mechanics is correct, we will always awaken in a world in which we have survived. If there is such a world.

His rhetoric is directly along the lines of Hitler before WWII. World sat on its hands then and it will this time. It is up for every individual to save himself spiritually and physically once WWIII starts.

1st thing that is getting knocked out will be all electronics. So plan on not relying on electricity too much. Also if you live in or near a big city good luck......

Once the electricity gets knocked out for good people will frikin flip out. Then you truly will know how many CrAzY people you are actually surrounded by. Especially the ones w/no Faith. They will be the ones to "lose it" and "go nutz"

It is better to be ready than to be deady.

I live in an rather up-scale neighbourhood in the Netherlands.
I'd say that the vast majority of my direct neighbours are atheists.

Boy, I'm screwed!

Wait what? Iran is going to attack the West and knock out our electricity?

To paraphrase Reservoir Dogs: 'You nuke me in a dream, you're gonna wake up and apologize'. :D

those with faith have lost it long ago and are nutz now already.

When did you guys break up?

Well, after learning that he's not the super villain he portrayed himself to be, I simply couldn't stand it anymore.

You really do have a thing for the bad boys, don't you?

Not really, but living outside the US it's quite hair-raising how politicians and the media portray certain countries and people rather than to factually address an issue. After all, who would have thought that Ahmadinejad is willing to make a liberal approach on issues the West worries about.

You won't hear much about that in the Media and from Politicians, for sure.

Of course. Let's sieze upon that little cherry above all else. And let's make that little cherry the centerpiece of our entire viewpoint on Iran. Wow. The holocaust-denying, genocide advocating president of Iran thinks it would be a good idea to give Iranians a bit more freedom, but he can't do anything because all the powers that be are dead set against it.

Yeah. That's really something to base a foreign policy on. Got any more straws we can clutch?

I doubt Ahmadinejad's view of greater social freedoms would align with the west. If anything, this sounds as if he was recommending concessions rather than a true overhaul of the system. It would be a nice step but it is going to take quite a bit of turn around and apology for me to view him as something close to the Good Guy. This makes him look better than the head of the Revolutionary Guard, but possibly being more reasonable than the Revolutionary Guard does not a Good Guy make.
