Democratic Gov. Neil Abercrombie wants to find a way to release more information about President Barack Obama's Hawaii birth and dispel conspiracy theories that he was born elsewhere.

Abercrombie was a friend of Obama's parents and knew him as a child, and is deeply troubled by the effort to cast doubt on the president's citizenship.

The newly elected governor will ask the state attorney general's office about what can be done to put an end to questions about Obama's birth documentation from Aug. 4, 1961, spokeswoman Donalyn Dela Cruz said Tuesday.

Link.

GOOD! Let's get past this once and for all! There are far more important matters to examine, such as what his policies are doing and will do in the future to this country.

If newspaper reports and a birth certificate didn't convince the birthers, no new information will.

... same as JFK, Moon Hoax, Truthers...

We've got a thread on this in CT.

No, it won't be the end of anything. The previous Republican governor said the same thing, and the monkeys still chatter on about it.

This really is just going to stir them up some more. It was a dead issue. Nobody of consequence is talking about it. GOP leaders were embarressed this even came up.

They could have filmed evidence of Obama's birth and affidavits from the doctors and nurses but still wouldn't be good enough. Once the seed of CT has been planted and germinates sufficiently, it grows like a weed. You can control it somewhat but you can't get rid of it. This will never go away.

Exactly, except now...gee, there must be something there, even the Governor of Hawaii thinks it's an important enough controversy to address it.

CTists will never be satisfied.

I always thought it would be fun if a politician (like this Governor) toyed with the nutjobs by acting all mysterious and answering every question with a "no comment" or better yet, "They have asked me not to comment on that"..."Who is 'they'?"..."I can't comment on that. I have to think of my family's safety". It would be a hoot!

As far as I can tell, there are two kinds of "birthers"*: One kind are the conspiracy theorists who will certainly never be satisfied by any evidence. They are, after all, conspiracy theorists.

The other kind are conservatives who aren't particularly agitated about the issue, and who are reasonably certain that Obama's original "long form" birth certificate will confirm his birthright citizenship. However, given the ongoing refusal to publish the original certificate, they have formed an understandable curiosity as to what else may be recorded on the long form, that may be awkward or embarassing to the President, and which may have undermined his candidacy had it been revealed during the campaign.

Not being conspiracy theorists, this second type will almost certainly be satisfied by publication of the original "long form" certficate. Though, if it does contain anything embarassing, they will certainly not hesitate to exploit it for partisan purposes.

And not being conspiracy theorists, this second type will certainly not be satisfied by arguments against publication that take the form "because conspiracy theorists are stupid!". And of course, the longer the refusal to publish persists on such flimsy grounds, the stronger the curiosity will become, and the more entrenched the assumption that the original certificate is embarrassing to the administration in some way.

Personally, I'm a "birther" of the second type. I'm convinced that Obama is an American citizen by birth. Indeed, I'm satisfied that the "short form" certificate is sufficient to establish this for the purposes of Presidential eligibility. I'm also curious to know what's on the original long form certificate. I'm curious to know why it hasn't been published. And I'm not at all satisfied with "we don't want to give CTs the satisfaction" as an explanation.

ETA: Perhaps this thread, in the USA Politics forum, can be used to discuss the political (i.e., non-CT) aspects of the issue. For example, here is a right-wing blogger who categorically rejects the citizenship CT, but nevertheless would like to see what's on the long form. Obviously he's a partisan hack, but I don't see why that would disqualify his ideas for discussion on a political forum.

* Well, only one kind, really, but I hope the others won't mind being lumped together under the same label.

So Hawaii's policies suggest a coverup?

What embarrassing information could possibly be on a birth certificate?

Appeal to incredulity noted.

Here is an article on the Hawaiian long form birth certificate. It includes things like the father's name, which might be embarrassing if it doesn't match the name published later. Personally, I think that possibility is a little far-fetched, and I'd prefer not to speculate. Much better if we had the actual document available.

But if you're convinced that the info on the certificate couldn't possibly be embarrassing, then we're back to "because CTs are stupid!" excuse for not publishing it.

Personally, I wish it had been published earlier, and the whole CT business brought to an end early. These intellectual and moral cowards, terrified of their own citizenship, waste the time of everyone with this idiotic and wasteful drivel they continue to spew. I don't have time for this, and I'm not wasting any more on it, other than to say "It's about time, and don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out."

How about the "what For" excuse.

Obama has nothing to gain by publishing it. He has released the curent version of the form which is perfectly legal and valid proof that he was born in Hawaii.

Why should he play their game, they'll just come up with something else to hate him over.

was there ever a CT that ended?

If you are suggesting that Obama was born within the Hollow Earth to a cult of Nazi Illumanati....well, that sounds rather possible now that I type it out. What did Nostradamus say about the matter? I keep trying to figure out, but it seems every single line he ever wrote refers only to Princess Di.

It was. Back in 2008, his campaign released a perfectly legal and valid form stating that he was born in Honolulu.

You don't understand the science of CTs, do you?

No, I guess I don't. When confronted with facts, I would prefer to take a more factual path, and do what's right, rather than what might make me feel like a big shot.

I remember seeing the form myself. I didn't have any question about his birth records before, but it was nice to see it, just the same, simply because it confirmed what I believed to be the case. That there are people so lacking in common sense and basic decency in this matter is sickening.

I didn't make an appeal. I asked a question.

Actually, what would be much better is if partisan busybodies would find something else to obsess over.

Obama's citizenship has been legally confirmed. That's where this story ends.

I'm rather fond of the "excuse" that says reasonable people should not cater to the whims of the unreasonable.

So you're saying the Moon Hoax was Princess Di's idea?
