It's because the Palestinians aren't their problem, despite having (more of a) responsibility for them in urging them to leave their homes at the outset of the war.

It's exactly the same reason why Israel should NOT absorb the majority of refugees, since the refugees left on their own accord. The refugees that were displaced should be compensated for lost property if they are not given the right to return. The trouble arises when figuring out who, exactly, was displaced and from where.
