Unemployment

If the problem is that companies are sitting on huge cash reserves, what about taxing unspent cash? Incentivize companies to do something with their money by taking a fraction of what just sits there.

So you wouldn't mind if the government took a fraction of your retirement money? After all, it's just sitting there.

Bottom line many of us disagree that giving the government more money is good idea. To me this battle is already long lost so I just come here and complain about it. That's really all one can do at this point.

That's nice that you feel that way. Clearly you're view is not shared by the business community as a whole, which is why they're sitting on $2 trillion of cahs.

Some sectors are definitely not investing in product due to lack of demand. What pisses me off is not that the money should be taxed but at a minimum corps sitting on huge piles of cash should pay out dividends.

I have less of an issue with the money businesses are sitting on than with the money banks refuse to loan. Because that cash was given to them by the government specifically to free up the credit market, it should be harshly taxed if not used for that purpose.

The business issue is one of demand, so it's kind of ridiculous to tell a company, "I know you don't require any additional labor, but we're going to tax you if you don't hire people."

I was laid off from my job over a year ago now, and being in an entry level with less than 2 years worth of experience, I have been unable to find a job in the field I went to school for. The area where I live is mostly the issue, as my field is not well represented here. I could go for a job such as working in retail or fast food (depressing as that sounds) but it would pay less than unemployment and I would be forced to lose my living arrangements and start over from the beginning essentially. It's a precarious predicament. I've some hope of getting rehired now that my former employer seems to be picking back up in business, but it's been a stressful year.

Of course I would mind. I hate paying taxes.
But if it's bad for the economy for me to have retirement money just sitting there, forcing me to pay taxes on it every year might cause me to do something with it.

Bad news:

So, yes, taxes do keep people from hiring.

Hmm, not really.

Irrational fear of tax increases that may or may not occur and most certainly have not happened yet are used to explain bad job numbers even though it's well understood that the issue is one of a crash in aggregate demand.

I can sympathize with you. I have been laid-off for 14 months, and am NOT an entry-level. Benefits were NOT extended past 42 weeks for us folks laid-off after april 2009
Luckily, my contacts have no landed me a consulting contract, which pays just a little more than the unemployment benefits were.

Start a business in your area? If not, why not?

It's probably not doing nothing, it's probably invested in something.

Let me just say this. I hope that all of you unemployed losers find work so that you can pay your fair share of taxes. I'm the one that's paying for you to suck of the government boob and I would appreciate some help.

I find it absolutely disgusting that a person like myself who moved to this country with a suitcase and a dream gets slammed on a regular basis just because we are successful. It's envy and class warfare and frankly I'm getting sick of it.

The logic is that the average college grad is young, eager to apply that knowledge they just paid for, eager to make a name for themselves, and thus more motivated.

Why should a college graduate be young? Bob Dole is a college graduate (University of Arizona, class of 1951).

The unemployment statistics are based on how much education a person has, not how much time has elapsed since you left school. I'd argue that in fact college graduates average older than the rest of the working-age population, both because a 16 year old high school dropout is working age, and because college graduates live longer than the general population....

You do realize that liberal economists like Paul Krugman endorse policies and stimulus that is supposed to help you as well. Pretty much weekly since the recession started he has bemoaned the lack of demand for goods, and how someone has to step up to recreate that demand. As a business owner, I'm sure you would really like to see more customers knocking on your door. It's only because that is not happening that the other issues get to you.

I know, I was just reversing what they said about me.

I like the idea of stimulating demand. I say cut the military budget and spend it on infrastructure. But for chrissakes don't tell me you need more money from the taxpayers. The bottom line is that our government was incompetently run and we had no rainy day fund to deal with this crisis. I'm fine with a bit of deficit spending btw, but this is ridiculous.

Ultimately I'm an optimist and I think we are going to be fine.

No, that's not what I said. I just think that time is the dominant variable. No matter what we do, it's going to take a long time for things to improve.
Then what should we do? What minimizes that time? What prevents us from getting in this situation again?
