Civil Unions coming to Illinois?

And what if the person they love, want to marry and spend the rest of their life with, happens to be the same gender as themselves?

No law is stopping them from loving each other and spending their life together.

btw, unlike President Obama, I'm actually perfectly fine with gay marriage.

I leave it up to the State's to decide...if the people there want it, so be it. I live in Illinois. It makes no difference to me either way.

Well, the issue is being left up to the individual states, some allow gay marriage (Like Vermont), others don't (Like Kansas). So..., your wish is being fulfilled there.

But you said that they have the same EXACT rights in EVERY state, but that's clearly false.

That's not what I said...

I said, "Gay people can already marry in every single state in the country...they have the SAME rights to marry as Straight people do."

If a state doesn't allow same-sex marriage:
- straight men can marry women
- gay men can marry women
- straight men cannot marry men
- gay men cannot marry men

If a state does allow same-sex marriage:
- straight men can marry women
- gay men can marry women
- straight men can marry men
- gay men can marry men

Well, as I expected, you were simply trolling with a play on words

Do you have anything constructive to contribute to the thread?

BTW, why leave out the gay women? :P

I'm merely pointing out the factual error people make when they claim that gays don't have the same rights to marry as straight people do.

gay women?? are they the hot gay women I see on certain websites?

Or the kind with short hair cuts who wear plaid and boots?

Different-race couples could already marry in every single state in the country before the legalization of interracial marriages...they had the SAME rights to marry as Same-race couples did.

Just like same-sex couples and different-sex couples today.

so what's the problem, right?

They can't marry someone they love and are sexual attracted to. I don't think defining how it is the same by gender makes a lot of sense when a marriage is supposed to be (ideally) with someone you truly care about in a unique way.

Black people could already marry in every single state in the country before the legalization of interracial marriages...they had the SAME rights to marry as White people did.

exactly

In fact, I, a straight man, may love and want to spend the rest of my life with my female cousin...but many states don't allow this to this day!

So if there was only same-sex marriage, and opposite-sex marriages were not legal, you wouldn't have a problem?

Remembering all of the benefits given to people who are married.

If I loved and was sexually attracted to my female cousin and wanted to marry her, many states won't allow that either.

Didn't they make these same arguments back when we were discussing if different races could marry?

just throwing arguments out there to see what people think.

you don't need to roll your eyes at a valid question.

It is perfectly viable to ask if pro same-sex marriage people believe that there should STILL be some kinds of restrictions to marriage or not.

yes or no...or does marriage just become truly meaningless?

To be honest, the only restriction I believe in is it being between two consenting adults. If one wants to marry their cousin, or marry 4 other people, I support that. In fact, I'm a pretty firm supporter of polyamorous marriage rights.

Which I happen to think is wrong as well, although certainly more understandable given the possible elements of intra-family abusiveness that could be involved.

However, assuming the rate of coercive marriages of that type were insignificant, I certainly don't see why we shouldn't allow it. We don't regulate for any other kind of possible poor genetic pairings, which we easily could, which shows that it's just another example of "society thinks its icky so its outlawed."

I think that's a bad reason.

I'd support that in theory, but that requires a much different societal/legal framework than the one supporting 2-person marriage, so it's not just an issue of arbitrary discrimination.

I agree with the above responses to that question.

And I'll ask:
Do you think that interracial marriages made marriage less meaningful?

I think it removed some meaning...and stopped it from being a racist institution. That is a good thing for people who are not racist.

And you did not answer the question in my previous post.

If I loved and was sexually attracted to my female cousin and wanted to marry her, many states won't allow that either.

And I'm not going to say that's right either. There's no particular reason not to allow this, actually (genetic issues are actually very minor for first cousins).

Direct family is different of course (well, in fact anyone you live with while they or you grow up is different ethically speaking).
