Saudis arrest hundreds of Al-Qaeda suspects

Most of the detainees were Saudis, but 25 were from other Arab, African and South Asian countries, the Interior Ministry said.

The ministry said agents had foiled plots to attack Saudi officials, civilians and journalists..

The Saudis have pursued aggressive anti-terror policies since 2003, when militants launched a series of attacks.

The Interior Ministry said the 149 suspects came from 19 separate militant cells.

Its good to see the Muslim world helping us fight the war on terror.
 
Good for them. Hopefully they're all valid arrests and lead to sensible prosecutions.

I'm sure they'll be sentenced to a horrible year of having some pro-government Islamic cleric lecture them on True IslamTM before releasing them. It's not like joining al Qaeda to become terrorists is a serious crime, like blasphemy or witchcraft.

i thought right-wingers were upset that Muslims were doing enough to fight terrorism.

yet when they do arrest terrorists, they still get attacked for not really meaning it.

Because it's the Wahabbist branch of Islam pushed by the Saudis that lays the groundwork for the terrorist ideology of groups like al Qaeda. Much like hard-core anti-abortion groups influence people like Eric Rudolph and Scott Roeder.
 
If they are legit arrests, hopefully Saudi Arabi does the right thing and locks them away for a very long time.

They've been arrested by the Saudis. It doesn't get much worse than that. Their prospects are not good. It is not good to be arrested by the Saudis.

OBL considers the Saudi regime as insufficiently muslim at best. The Saudis may not be our friends, but there's a lot of wiggle room between that and hopping into bed with Osama.

So long as they keep pushing Wahabbism, Saudi Arabia will be a terrorist breeding ground. It's no coincidence that most of the 9/11 hijackers came from Saudi Arabia.

Mohammed Atta became extremist and decided to do terrorism not in Saudi Arabia, but in the liberal Western-democracy known as Germany.

Do you know what the word "most" means?

Atta was Egyptian, but 15 of the 19 were Saudi. None were born in the west. Atta was 22 before he moved to Germany. None moved to the US before the spring of 2000.

how many of the hijackers developed their extremism in Saudi Arabia?

the Hamburg cell folks all seem to have become extremist in Germany.

Liberal, western, democratic....Germany.
 
Saudi internal politics are complex and unstable. A small elite with most of the money and all the power; an extreme religious clergy; interesting neighbours (Iraq , Iran, Yemen); a king with delusions of divine rights.

All it needs is Oliver bloody Cromwell...
