Withdrawing under fire is the standard tactic employed to give the impression that those doing the firing are the victors. Nothing new here.

In my humble opinion, Gaza was Sharon's sacrificial lamb in order to try to convince the world that Palestinians are too backwards and ape-like to be trusted with territory formerly ruled by Israel.

His hope was that Gaza would fall into utter chaos and disaster, and this would be used as an excuse to never leave most or even a majority of the West Bank.

I honestly cannot recall exactly what I thought about the proposed unilateral withdrawal from Gaza, in 2005. Though I'm SURE I enjoyed watching those scumbags getting yanked from their homes by the IDF. That was fun to watch.

With or without security negotiations? You just said that withdrawing from territory without a security negotiation is a mistake. And since the Palestinians don't want to negotiate, then that means that Israel shouldn't withdraw.

I said that I believe that Sharon chose to leave Gaza unilaterally, without a concrete security agreement with the Palestinians, in order to turn Gaza into the Wild West.

So yes, the way Israel left Gaza, was a bad idea.

Unlike the pull out from Lebanon, there was not an established government that existed, which could take over the evacuated land.

Sharon was a calculating character.

Thunder's whole point in making those claims about leaving a territory without an agreement sending it into chaos was just to have some reason to start blaming Israel for withdrawing from Gaza, after years of blaming it for not withdrawing from Gaza. You can't expect logical consistency from someone whose only real goal is simply to blame Israel for everything.

And this 'humble opinion' is based on what? Wishful thinking?

This is a fringe, baseless opinion not rooted in reality, nor logical. Additionally, it does not fall in line with the support for this withdrawal from the US, UN, EU, Israel and the PA.

Gaza, as it was abandoned by the Egyptians, was already chaotic and a powder keg, and a parcel of land where opposing Palestinian factions have been at eachother's throats for decades already. This already chaotic situation, which existed prior to any Israeli occupation, would never lead to any agreement for a phased withdrawal as presented in peace initiatives, past and present. Israel would have been in Gaza in perpetuity, as would have been the case in Lebanon.
