Traffic agent Daniel Chu - the surly meter man disciplined for bad driving and sent to sensitivity training after a run-in with a Queens pol - plans to sue the city for $2 million.

Chu claims Councilman Dan Halloran and his then-chief of staff defamed him with "false reports" that he drove recklessly with police lights flashing while yakking on a cell phone, court papers say.

Never mind that Chu later admitted to those charges during an NYPD disciplinary hearing and was busted back to foot patrol, police sources said.

Story here.

Also covered by the NY Post:

Halloran – a cop-turned-lawyer who last year became the first openly "heathen" member elected to the Council — claims he confronted Chu after seeing the traffic agent speeding down streets in Whitestone, the legal papers say.

The councilman told the media that Chu‘s patrol car lights were flashing as he sped through stop signs and red lights, all the while yakking on his cell phone, according to the papers.
But rather than racing to some official business, Halloran claimed that Chu stopped and parked at a Dunkin Donuts

IANAL, but I don't think this lawsuit is going to go very well for Mr. Chu.

Dang. The cops & donuts meme was slowly fading, and then this comes along.

Seriously, is it any surprise to anyone, particularly and ex-cop, that so many cops use their lights and sirens and run red lights to get around in non-response situations? Power corrupts.

Oddly, the presence of police vehicles running around with flashing lights dropped drastically when the city I live in started installing dashboard cameras that would start automatically when the light show started.

Please don't confuse this guy as a cop. He is a traffic enforcement agent or T.E.A., aka meter maid and most of the ones I work with are scumbags that abuse their vehicles and peace officer status.

He was caught doing something he wasn't allowed to do, now he has to pay the price.

Not if he wins $2 million. ;)
