Hispanics are not a race, in New York City

Originally the term applied to the whole Iberian peninsula, now it generally applies to the nation of Spain; either way, the Catalans would be included.

Including the Catalans native to France? What about Basques? But not the Portuguese? And do we even want to address those on both sides of the Pyrenees who speak Occitans? Surely they must be of the same race, even if they are on different sides of the border.

The problem with conceptions of race is that people are never that simple. You can't attempt to reconcile genetics and history into a few buckets, it just doesn't work. Is a Berber a Caucasian because they're white? What about the vast separation, genetically, between northern and southern Italians? Are Australian aborigines the same race as Hausa Africans because they both have dark skin?

It's not a racial term in Europe, purely geographic. So, yes, some Catalans and Basques would be excluded.

ehhh...not exactly so.

many Asians, Africans, and Europeans have had zero racial intermingling for thousands of years.

mixed-race folks usually refers to people who have recent interracial lineage, such as great-great grandparents.

i would not be suprised if the nearest black person in my family was more than 3,000 years ago. and an Asian? much farther away.

..unless of course one of my ancestors was raped by a raiding Mongol in Eastern Europe. that is indeed possible.

From a European perspective, surely only the Spanish are Hispanic.

I am Hispanic of Puerto Rican origin, born and raised in NYC, so that makes me a Nuyorican. Puerto Rican's are the only people from a Spanish speaking country that are considered United States American by birth, PR is a commonwealth of the US.

The word Hispanic was made up in the United States by non Latino's back then. It describes those that come from a Spanish speaking country or from a Hispanic culture. We on this planet Earth are of one race, the rest is culture. Now when aliens come down on their flying saucers with two heads, then we can say they are from another race, because we on Earth are from the human race.

On some job applications I have seen they have choices, are you: Black of non Hispanic, or White of non Hispanic..etc.., or Hispanic, I feel this is more accurate. This has to be done because of discrimination, they in a company have to fill a quota, a certain percent of Hispanic's or Blacks have to be hired..etc..

Humanity placed these problems within ourselves, and I feel that Whites weren't the only ones that discriminated against other human beings. Now its the time to start to clean all of this up, and I feel that things will change more into the future as we evolve more, because I feel that we are still primitive beings, we have an awful lot to learn. Just my 2 cents.

I just heard a report on NY1, Time Warner Cables NYC news station, that said that NYC schools will be requiring all students to report their race. And if they dont do so, a schoo official will actually LOOK at them, and determine their race for them.

Furthermore, "Hispanic" can not be used as a racial identification.

They can only choose White, Black, Asian/Pacific Islander, or Native American.

There is something fishy about this story. Arnie Duncan says this is tied to the census, yet the census had 14 choices for race.

Again, fishy. Parent/Teacher meetings for high school students is tomorrow and Friday, which is a half day for students.
