Merged Teabagger Candidate Rich Iott is into Nazi Cosplay

and that is better how exactly?
It would reflect light better and combat global warming.

I got an invite from my brother (he runs a US Civil War Fife and Drum group) to attend an event. The sponsoring organization needs people with Confederate garb. If I procured a Southern uniform, would that mean I am pro-slavery?

According to the logic of the people that are attacking Rich Iott over this, it would mean that you were a slavery fanboy. :)

Teabaggers godwin self

A REPUBLICAN candidate in the US mid-term elections is battling to save his credibility after it was revealed that he had dressed up in a German SS uniform to participate in Nazi re-enactments.
Rich Lott, a favourite of the conservative Tea Party movement, said in a statement that he meant no disrespect to anyone who had served in the military.
But his actions drew sharp criticism from Holocaust survivors and from Democrats, who were keen to portray his hobby as evidence that Republicans are increasingly supporting fringe candidates.

Mr Lott's name was swiftly removed from a list of Republicans deemed to be among the party's top challengers in next month's mid-term elections for the House of Representatives.
Photographs of him in the uniform of the 5th SS Panzer Division disappeared overnight from the website of Wiking.org, the re-enactment group ''dedicated to the preservation of the history of WWII and the lifestyle of the German combat soldier''.

Seems to me that whatever uniform he wears in his spare time doing historical re-enactments should have no bearing on his performance in his day job. We should be more concerned with his actual position on policy as opposed to what clothes he wears.

Of course, for the press at least, its much easier to tweak people with a photo of a guy in a nazi uniform than it is to critically analyze policy.

Oh look, something shiny over there....

That depends. Would you also be setting up a website proclaiming the valor and idealism of slave-owners?

Actually, according to the logic of those of us attacking Iott over this, he would have to be part of a group that proclaims they are fanboys of slavery before he would actually be accused of being a fanboy of slavery.

Nah... he likes to play F M Bradley. That 70s, 80s black porn star who nailed all them white chicks.

Obama prefers young Pakistani males. Those were the guys he hung out with when he was in college.

I doubt he ever had a girlfriend in high school or college.

Nope. This reenactment group says nothing of the kind. It is just that those attacking Mr. Iott want them to be nazis fanboys.

They are in fact members of a credible historical reenactment association That has by-laws prohibiting nazi fanboys from being members. Both the website of that association and the wiking group's own website have prominent disclaimers that make it perfectly clear they strongly disaprove of nazi policies & actions.

People who are desperately wanting them to be nazis so that they can make political hay out of this are choosing to ignore those disclaimers and turn a single paragraph about the history of foreign volounteers recruited into the ss into a manifesto of their nazi love.

The truth is that you can almost always find some sort of language on these group's websites that attempts to put an emphasis on the sacrifice & experience of the individual soldier in combat. It is a common way of distancing themselve from war atrocities and political polocies. Don't read too much into it.

If it's all so innocent then why is the republican party scrambling to disown this man?

Because they know the pansy liberal media is only interested in optics and not in the actual discussion of platforms or policies.

Because they like many, they don't understand what they are seeing.

I don't blame them or anyone, really. On the surface, it is seemingly akin to being a skinhead or something. Plus, you have the politicos spouting out retoric to make it look as bad as possible.

In my personal opinion Mr. Iott is done for politically, and it is a smart move to cut him loose no matter what the truth of the matter is. Callous, but smart.

Their "disclaimers" basically say "Yeah, the Nazis were bad, but these particular Nazis were okay". Hardly an expression of strong disapproval.

I've seen the disclaimers widely reported by media outlets critical of Iott (including the New York Times piece Puppycow links above). The problem isn't that people are ignoring them, it's they don't find them particularly convincing.

It's hard not to read too much into it when the soldiers in question are Nazi war criminals.

Well, You have to call 'em like you see 'em.

I've said my piece in this thread several different times, based on my personal knowledge & experiences with these groups. If You don't find it convincing, I can't help that.

I think the thing you're missing is that you still haven't addressed Iott's very odd way of describing the Waffen SS. His group considers them freedom fighters, not "bad guys", and I think that's where most people are coming from on this. If he said "someone has to play the bad guys", that'd be one thing. But according to the website, they weren't really all that bad.

You agree that in reality, the Waffen SS were beyond bad, right? They were evil? So the Wikings are historically inaccurate?

This shows every semblance of being exactly the sort of smear campaign that the candidate in question claims it to be. Of particular note is that there is actually no substantion - no quotations, stories, descriptions of anti-Semitic ideas or behavior on the part of Mr. Iott. The major criticism in this thread of the Wikings is that...they don't criticize Nazi Germany strongly enough?

Contrary to popular belief, human beings (and groups or institutions composed thereof) are complex enough to have both admirable and abominable traits at the same time. Noting or discussing the former does not equate to condoning the latter.

What happens when you note and discuss the former and brush the latter under the rug?
