Happy Birthday John Lennon.

It's funny that some folks call John a "hippie" b/c he sometimes wore his hair long and wasn't a proponant of the Vietnam War.

The guy was a working class kid from Liverpool, then a club rocker, then a multi-millionaire who drove a Rolls.

Not much of a hippie, that.

Middle class kid.Macca too.George and Ringo were working class.

I like Beatles and Lennon music but I do think the hero worship of him goes too far. Maybe it's understandable considering his sad end. And I think it's also helped by the fact that he's not been able to make any bad songs or say anything dumb for the last 30 years. I mean, if you're around and saying and doing stuff then you can potentially look bad doing so, but you can't do that if you're dead.

I do like the Lennon song God quite a bit, although from what I read he was actually a believer in some things, unlike what the words of that song implies. But also the words in that song imply that people shouldn't worship celebrity and instead should "believe in" the people that are actually important in their lives and although Lennon accepted plenty of celebrity worship just the fact that he did write a song putting it down a bit is good IMO.

ETA: Elvis Costello has a song named "The Other Side of Summer" that has a good line. It goes "Was it a millionaire that said 'imagine no possessions.'" Good point.

Axl Rose isn't even a better songwriter than Yoko.

Agreed, and I think Yoko is a crap songwriter.

Really, GnR had what, 4 really good songs and some decent filler? Most of Appetite For Destruction and the two Use Your Illusions were decent, but other than that, utter crap. It speaks volumes that Geffen decided to put a Rolling Stones cover on their greatest hits album.

Good point.

I once heard an interview w/ George, said he decided to go out to the Haight and see what the hippie scene was about. But "it was just a bunch of spotty kids" goofing off, so he quickly left.

The Beatles had a very energetic work ethic. No time for that nonsense.

John Lennon was part of the leftist gang of thugs who aided the North Vietnamese, the Khumer Ruge and the Patet Lao in bringing mass murdering communism to South East Asia.

John Lennon was a socialist war criminal and on December 8th 1980 his death sentence was carried out. Good shooting David!

We haven't had to hear Lennon's "Give B.S. a chance." mouth for 30 years now!
this post should not surprise me.
your posts on homosexual, muslim, and basic human rights issues are repugnant.
at least you are consistent...pitiful, but consistent.:(

...thanks to john's lyrics, it is possible to 'imagine' a world without people like you.

On a side note, even actual hippies could be uber-capitalists.

The business practices of the Grateful Dead, another extremely hard-working group and also bona fide hippies, are now being studied by Fortune 500 companies for their innovations in highly market-focused capitalism.

The role of well-dwelling dead heads in early Internet development is also an extremely interesting case study.

But fwiw, here's John on commies and bomb-throwing radicals:

"If you want money for people with minds that hate, all I can tell you is, brother, you have to wait."

"If you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao, you ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow."

I also remember seeing some film shot at his house... I don't know why the film crew was there, but anyway, this actual hippie who wanted to see him had climbed over the fence and made it up to the house while they were shooting and wanted to talk to John about what his music "meant".

John was damn rude to him. (As George Martin once said, John "did not suffer fools gladly".) He said, "I don't know what it means, maybe I wrote it because I had a good **** that morning."

He did have a nasty side.
