So the EDL are having one of their grand days out this Saturday in Leicester, where they intend to protest against brown people fundamentalist Muslims.

It seems a rather obvious choice, since we do have a notably large South Asian population here, yet the racial tensions that have been preexisting in some of the other towns where they've had their protests just don't really exist here, and haven't for over forty years. Obviously UAF are planning counter-protests, which I sort of wish they wouldn't, having read of how these things have panned out in other cities.

The EDL have been banned from marching, but are of course allowed a static protest. The media are reporting that they intend to march anyway, presumably eastwards from their starting point, since that would take them into one of the main predominantly Muslim areas of Leicester.

I'm almost curious enough to take a walk up and see what's going on, but that would be a very bad idea, not least because as a fat and unfit man, I may get knocked over by the police and die, so I think I'll give it a miss.

Has anyone else here had this particular brand of Nazis (the EDL, not the police) doing this in their own towns?

No, as far as I can tell, they just hate brown people Muslims. I think a protest against Jews in Leicester would be a little like protesting against Samoans, in terms of the numbers that are commonly (visibly) around.

It's almost as if our APL EDL friends are targeting cities where normal white people and those frightful foreign types live together in relative harmony, in order to stir up tension.

....this particular brand of Nazis (the EDL, not the police)

:D

The SDL protested in my home town. They were outnumbered by the Police, and in turn both (together) were outnumbered by the counter-protest.

This is exactly what I expect to happen here. Although EDL are claiming that over 3000 will attend, and this is exactly what the police are preparing for, I'd be surprised if they get over 500. The UAF counter-protest is indeed likely to be much larger, and if past events are anything to go by, once they don't have a decent EDL presence to demonstrate against, a fraction of them will just take it out on the police and local businesses.
Wouldn't it be nice if they were just completely ignored?
That would be the ideal outcome. I'd love it if everyone just went about their normal business in town, saying 'excuse me' when they need to get past, and generally pretending they weren't there.

Yes.
Not too violent. Just some pushing and shoving. A few arrests. Not much to report.

There was a chant of "Allah, Allah. Who the **** is Allah?"
They also chanted that in Bradford, and Manchester:

So expect the same.
Some-one needs to tell them the difference between attacking what you hate and nurturing what you love. What do they actually do to keep English customs/traditions going?

We had an email at work asking us not to come in on Saturday. I went to the practice manager and asked whether this was advice, or if we were prohibited from coming in. He looked at me and said that, for me, it meant I was prohibited. I asked if this was just because he knew that I would come in and hang a banner from his front office window saying "Nazi punks **** off", and he said that that was part of it.

Our local BNP fella at the last election was English. I hope someone had the balls to shout "Go Home!" when he came to the doors, just to see how he liked the shoe being on the other foot......

Great. This is really one English export product we could do without.

And the EDL is importing some Tea Party:

The league has also developed links with Pamela Geller, who was influential in the protests against plans to build an Islamic cultural centre near Ground Zero. Geller, darling of the Tea Party's growing anti-Islamic wing, is advocating an alliance with the EDL. The executive director of the Stop Islamisation of America organisation, she recently met EDL leaders in New York and has defended the group's actions, despite a recent violent march in Bradford.

I see there was good reason I was careful to call the EDL an English export product. ;)

in a recent op-ed in the Dutch NRC newspaper, historian James Kennedy contrasted the European populist movements with the American Tea Party, and noted that Islamophobia is a defining element of the European ones, but not of the Tea Party. That Guardian article notes a shift in that:
Burghart says anti-Islamic tendencies have become far more marked in the grassroots organisation: "As we move farther and farther away from the Tea Party origins, that were ostensibly around debt and bail-outs, social issues like Islamophobia are replacing that anger, that vigour. The idea that there is a war between Islam and the west is becoming commonplace."

Since you brought up Wilders, I'd like to point out that this (hating Muslims) is not something the English invented. No, we just added crowds of soccer hooligans to it.

And there is an SDL as well, I believe, although their website appears to be down. I believe Scotland are also quite proficient at producing soccer hooligans.

My apologies if I gave that impression. Unfortunately, hating Muslims has become our national sport, even government policy. Thus far, we haven't had (organized) demonstrations riots demonstrations against Muslims. There have been a couple spontaneous demonstrations directly in the wake of Theo van Gogh's murder, and there have been a dozen or so arson attempts at mosques since, but I'm not aware of an organization behind this.

Come to think of it: in a way, the EDL coming to Amsterdam might be beneficial. The association of Wilders with football hooligans will not be good for his electoral success.

Alas, yes, it was the SDL who I referred to above as marching in my town.

That one's hilarious. First Google points me to <site1>.
There I read the text "Site has closed now new site is <site2> cut and paste into browser or click on link below"
However the idiot who put that up (and hasn't apparently heard of punctuation) put that text in flash so you can't actually copy (rather than cut) it.
And <site2> doesn't exist...

In case anyone missed it on the news, here's the brave EDL as they pass by a (n Asian-run) fast food restaurant, ready to attack the presumably fundamentalist and extremist Muslims who are minding their own business inside, demonstrating that they aren't in fact bullying cowards who just don't like brown people, but political activists fighting against the threat of jihadists.

Camera work is obviously about as good as you'd expect. I did enjoy the scum being held by the dog at the end, though.
