"To amend the Public Health Service Act to require the Secretary of Health and Human Services to ensure that each HHS health service program or HHS health survey provides, to the extent the Secretary determines appropriate and practicable, for the voluntary collection of data on the sexual orientation and gender identity of individuals who apply for or receive health services through such program, or who respond to such survey."
Read the bill here.

If you were to believe the Chicken Littles, this bill would mandate that children getting eye examines at school would be asked if they are gay.

I have a few questions...Is information about race, creed, religion, etc asked when children enroll in various HHS programs? Is that information tied directly to the student? Is the child or parent responsible for filling out those various forms?

The key phrase here is "to the extent the Secretary determines appropriate and practicable." That and "voluntary."

I don't have a problem with this.

Personally, I think the information should be asked and recorded rather than merely assumed, particularly if the children are of age when sexual preference is likely to have already become a social-sexual issue for them. Even at a young age most people are pretty sure about which gender they are physically attracted to, and if the answer is that they don't know, or are unsure, that too, is a potentially important health relevent issue.

That premise rests on the condition that the government has any business assuming or not assuming anything at all about a student's sexuality. It's really none of their business. Teach the damned kids and don't worry about what they put their dicks in.

Remember that in the Great, Perfected Society, government gets to beat up on people who would tease someone, and gets to give said teased children non-sexual, empowering, positive stokes to boost them.

WE are talking about health issues, not anything that isn't of the same concern now, though there is a standing assumption of heterosexual behavior with regards to such. WE aren't talking about having teachers in classes asking for a show of hands, or issuing them stars to wear and assigning them to "re-training" centers as some seem to think would be more appropriate.

What's to tease about? Attention should always be focussed on correcting inappropriate behavior and bigoted ignorances, that is why people live within, and agree to abide by the rules and guidelines of, society.

Any such issues can be easily addressed without bothering to discern the orientation of any students.

No, we're not. So I don't know why you felt it necessary to say that.

Not necessarily. Certain demographics have a higher percentage of contracting or developing diseases or illnesses. If the patients complete history is known at an early age, Doctors will be able to keep an eye out for early symptoms of these diseases/illnesses.

I have no problem with this.

Well, some do seem to be trying to build a strawman about these health relevent questions leading to general teasing/taunting bullies and dorky, play-ground monitor society rules dealing with such. If you agree with the absurdity of such, then consider it an aside intended more for the general discussion than our direct and immediate exchange.

It's sponsored by a bunch of Democrats, it makes it illegal to adversely use the information, and it's still in subcommittee.

A quick search couldn't reveal any actual reason why any of the sponsors think this is a good idea. It may not really be very much of a solution to any particular problem. Adding sexual orientation to the protected classes would make a whole lot more sense. But, I guess the sponsors realize such a measure would be doomed.

I'll have to learn more, but right now it looks like a poor solution to the wrong problem.

It means the HHS can collect national data regarding health statistics that can be categorized according to person's sexual orientation and gender identity.

So that means that each state will collect the exactly same information. Some homophobe southern state (for example) cannot decide that "who cares" about diseases, illnesses, or other physical ailments (think violent actions) that pertain to the gays, when it comes to collecting such data on the federal level.

Federal government, and us in general, might find out that some minorities appear to suffer excessive amounts from broken jaws, bruises, dislocations, hairline fractures, etc.

So yes. Obviously this is all about wanting to know who your kid wants to bugger.

People choose to live within a free society. I'm not defending the behavior, but not everybody thinks the purpose of life and government is to go around correcting behaviors.

Seems rather a strawman, as I don't see anyone claiming that this is the sole or even primary purpose of life or government.

I don't think the government should be asking this question, regardless of whether it's voluntary

per Wiki: "Sexual orientation describes a pattern of emotional, romantic, or sexual attraction to men, women, both genders, neither gender, or another gender."

What about object fetishes? What about bestiality? etc...

What about JREFer's ... who get turned on by the pursuit of knowledge and debunking woo?
