What is the solution to America's immigration problem?

I still think blanket amnesty has to be a part of the solution. Anything less will only encourage those already here to stay underground and do whatever it takes to stay that way. Most of them are already working so let's get them processed and legal.

This, of course, assumes that we can effectively secure the border at the same time.

Once the supply of undocumented workers is cut off you no longer have the issue with people employing them at sub-minimum wage rates.
 
A solution would be to shoot on sight anyone attempting to come into America through non-designated entry points.

we have to show the world, and ourselves, that we respect our nation and our sovereignity enough to enforce our damn laws.

if we do not respect our laws...no one else will.

like I said before, let individuals who have been here for more than 5 years stay. let families who have been here for more than 3 years stay.

but everyone else must go.

and those folks who can stay, must wait twice as long as legal immigrants, to get citizenship. and they must pay a penalty, and they can only work in their one state of residence.

if we do not respect ourselves....we deserve respect from no one else.

Would probably work out fine. These illegal immigrants work and presumably don't pay tax, so raking in a few billions would help out a cash-strapped country like the US would be helpful.

If Congress passes a law tomorow, mandating a 1 year prison sentence for knowingly hiring an illegal alien, our illegal immigration problem will fix itself very quickly.

I cannot believe this is not already law.
 
Step 1: Make legal immigration an attainable goal for people without an American family member or a job completely 100% lined up. Perhaps make it possible to get a green card if you:
1) Can pass a background check.
2) Pass an English language test.
3) Have a (to be determined) amount of money to be able to support yourself while you search for work.

I think if you make legal immigration easier, the illegal immigration rate will go WAY down.

I'd say solution number one is to stop calling criminal violation of sovereign borders "immigration"

This is a trick used by propagandists in order to make it seem like those who are for enforcing laws equally regardless of race or origin as somehow "anti-immigration"

That's part of the reason we have the problem. The monied interests want a cheap labor force.

I would say that the best cure woulld be to sieze assets of businesses that hire illegals at sub-standard pay, make sure that the illegals are paid the full amount they would have coming out of assets siezed and then deport them.

It is simple justice for the worker and ruinous to the businesses caught exploiting them.

It would also finance the added burden on government resources.

I think Penn & Teller already handled this issue pretty well (NSFW):





Worth watching- in one segment they hire a team of illegals to build a fence like the one proposed, and then, time how long it takes them to get through it.

Of course, we could add 3 chain link fences, or maybe 10, but you certainly don't think much of our Mexican neighbors if you think thats going to stop them.

Want to stop illegals? Go after the employers.

Also: I support a crackdown on illegal immigration because I support LEGAL immigrants, many of whom have spent an enormous amount of time and money to come here, many of whom must live for YEARS without their families, and many of whom are jerked-around by an unfair bureaucracy. I feel for Mexicans in poverty, really I do, but don't our Indian and Korean friends deserve our sympathy too?

Finally: unchecked immigration will not fix Mexico, no more than the Irish booms of the 1800s helped Ireland. This is a symptom of a terrible disease; the state of Mexico is very sick.

How about new Social Security cards?

Use all the newfangled technologies to make them impossible to forge. Make them double as photo ID cards. Then make employers verify them when they hire people.

Simple.

Oh let's not just pass it off to Penn & Teller. After, Penn & Teller are basically just comics … and rather filthy mouthed ones at that. And a lot of what they believe is sheer nonsense. Even lies.

For example, fence proponents don't want just 700 miles of discontinuous fence, as P&T would make you think. P&T note what Bush (who only got dragged into building any fence) proposed, then quote people saying things like "The U.S. Mexico border is 2000 miles. It'll have bigger holes than a [NSFW]" as if that's supposed to prove something. But that's not what fence advocates really want built. They want a continuous fence system, border to border. Nor is what was built even similar to what we were told would be built with the money. For example, the bill called for 300 miles of double fencing. You want to know the total number of miles of double fence that was actually built? Just 34 miles (http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=37025 ). And DHS was so bold about it's lies that in 2009, Napolitano claimed ((http://www.chicagodefender.com/article-6714-napolitano-pronounces-us-border-more-secure-now.html ) that 600 miles of fencing had been built and that as a result our border was more secure … so secure that she said it's time to move towards giving the millions of illegals already in the country citizenship. Both are lies. Neither 600 miles of fence was built, nor is the border more secure now then it was in 2005.

But let's get back to P&T. In their videos, they hire a group of illegals to build what they claim is a sample stretch of the proposed "wall" … and then have those immigrants test this wall and they bust through it in three to five minutes. But the fence they build is nothing like what fence proponents actually want built … or even the fences that were supposed to be built under the Bush law. P&T are baldfaced liars when they state in their video that the one layer wall they had the illegals build is "just like the walls that … snip … the government proposed".

Now, curiously, they mention the border "wall" (it's actually a multi-fence system) in San Diego that was built by (they claim) illegals. What they don't mention is the San Diego fence system that stretches 14 miles has been VERY effective. In that stretch of the border where the system was built they were catching over 100,000 illegals a year (with hundreds of thousands more making it past the guards) prior to the fence. After they built the fence system, the number apprehended dropped to just 5000 a year with very few actually getting past the three fence system (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5326083). Fences do work.

Again, I'm more than willing to debate YOU on the efficacy of a properly designed and constructed fence/wall system. But don't hide behind these lying comics.
