We spend a lot of time sticking our noses into other countries' business. If there is an escape route for those who take our side in an unsuccessful attempt to effect the changes we want, citizens of those countries are more likely to go along with us.

That was the idea behind accepting any Cuban who reaches dry land.

For instance my Finacee has come here from the US. It has cost us a LOT of money to do this legally. As a result I am all for sending people that try and do it illegally back to their home country.

I have had much the same experience, but with a completely different result. I'm an Australian, married to an American and I emigrated to the USA legally. I know how expensive and difficult it is to legally emigrate to the USA even when one is married to an American, and am completely in favour of making legal immigration much easier and less expensive for those who come over here and wish to work. I also have a lot of sympathy for the illegals as my opinion is that they only immigrate illegally because legal immigration is a practically impossible outcome for them.
