It has nothing to do with race. She's a KENYAN. By birth. By citizenship. And she ILLEGALLY entered the US. And ILLEGALLY defied deportation orders. And ILLEGALLY obtained welfare.

While I don't necessarily agree with BaC, I'd point out that since she's Kenyan, she does belong in Kenya, just as an Australian belongs in Australia, a New Zealander in NZ, an Englishman in England, and an American in America.

Now having said that, there is nothing stopping such people from emigrating from their own country if it is done legally, and once they get the paperwork through they then can belong in their adopted country.

For instance my Finacee has come here from the US. It has cost us a LOT of money to do this legally. As a result I am all for sending people that try and do it illegally back to their home country.

I know.

1) your new thread is poorly titled and people browsing the forum will have no idea what it is about.

2) the thread is redundant in that there is already a clearly-labeled thread in this sub-forum

3) the cited article and editorial leave out important quotes to put her statements in context, i.e. she said that because America is owned by Almighty God, it has a debt to help people, help the poor, help other countries and help women (including illegal immigrants).

4) The editorial makes unsupported assertions, e.g. "The objective of the radical, progressive left, as personified by the unelected advisers in this White House, is to level the playing field, eliminate individual achievement in favor of social justice."

Now that we are done with the hyperbole, let's discuss the matter. I am very unhappy that she received government assistance after she clearly and unrepentantly broke the law and overstayed her visa, but apparently illegal aliens in Boston can receive housing assistance despite their immigration status. I would like to know which government agency sent her disability checks and if these checks were sent before her asylum status had been decided.

As for the asylum status, I would want to know more about the details of the case before forming an opinion.

So, as to the intent of your OP, I agree that both this case and immigration in general deserve a closer examination.

Pay attention to your own links. She fell victim to Guillian-Barre while she was preparing to leave after the assylum request was turned down.

We normally grant assylum to refugees who are in danger if they return home. This is not a person who came here to take your minimum wage job away. We have granted amnesty to some ghastly tyrannts in the past, so don't be too fast to throw someone out who has not, to the best of our knowledge, done anyhting malicious or evil back home.


I say we kick her out of the country ... back to Kenya where she belongs.

Asylum status and permanent resident status can be revoked.

Most likely, the relevant laws have a specific list of things that can disqualify you for public housing, and nobody thought to put "illegal immigrant" onto it, since people really didn't care much at the time the law was written.

I don't know. Are they fleeing one of the worst regimes on the planet, and willing to accept whatever the consequences of breaking other nations' laws in the process, as they desperately seek asylum from whatever nation will grant it?

Or are they simply immigrants who can't be bothered to fill out the paperwork and wait in line like everybody else, and who think that disrespecting the laws of the very country from which they expect hospitality is something they're entitled to, for no other reason than because they want to?

Have you bothered to find out whether there was any kind of political unrest in Kenya in the relevant time frame which might cause some people to NEED to leave in a hurry?

I get the impression that that requires more deliberation than is convenient to someone so accustopm to throwing out knee-jerk right-wing talking points.

Kenya doesn't seem to be experiencing any such political unrest at the moment. Surely American generosity can extend at least as far as a one-way ticket back home for this lady. Once there, she can either petition for asylum, or else get in line like every other person who hopes one day to become a legal U.S. immigrant, and is willing to follow due process.

Considering that a judge decided it is unsafe for her in Kenya and me having no information to the opposite. Why should i doubt the Judges decision?
 
I can see both sides of the issue

Here is the part of the timeline that I can confirm:

2000. Arrives on tourist visa with stated intention of returning home.

Diagnosed with severe illness.

2002 applies for political asylum in 2002, citing violence in her native Kenya. Onyango was a legal resident of the United States at the time and had received a Social Security card a year earlier.

2004. attends Obama's Senate swearing in ceremony.

2004 Asylum status denied. She is order to leave immediately.

Ignores order and lives illegally in the U.S.

Files two appeals and both are denied.

Appeals in 2009 and is told she may stay while appeal is pending. Argues that her health and her being a minority in Kenya (member of the Luo tribe) are reasons for her to stay.

May 2010. Judge L.I. Shapiro grants asylum status stating (among other things) that because her asylum application has become so public, she would face persecution "as a traitor to her government." (The Kenyan government says it would not persecute her, although Public Communications Secretary Dr. Alfred Mutua has officially said "the case of Ms. Zeituni Onyang’o is an embarrassment and has tarnished the name of the country.”)

September 2010. Says incredibly stupid things in media interview.

I cannot determine when she started to receive government housing and when she started to receive $700 disability checks.
