'...The US state of Virginia is preparing for the execution of Teresa Lewis, who is set to become the first woman to be put to death in the US for five years and in Virginia since 1912. ...'

From http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-11401164

Once again, the USA joins some of the most despotic states on earth by being about to murder judicially yet another person. In so doing, it keeps company with the likes of Saudi Arabia - the fine upholder of human rights and China - which increases its enormous murder rate depending on the time of the year, Pakistan - a supporter of international terrorism and Iran - part of the USA's own axis of evil.

The sorry scale of the international death penalty barbarism is indicated by the following: -

'...According to Amnesty International, 137 countries have abolished the death penalty. Argentina, Chile, and Uzbekistan outlawed the death penalty in 2008. During 2007, 24 countries, 88% in China, Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and the United States alone, executed 1,252 people compared to 1,591 in 2006. ...'

The USA officially murdered more of its own citizens in 2009 than any other country on earth, with the exception of China, Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

The next time the USA calls on any state to respect human dignity and human rights we all have the right to vomit violently at the official hypocrisy.

The USA should hang its head in shame at this latest, disgusting act of inhumanity.

Thank God.

When I read the thread title, I thought Twisted Sister was going on tour again.

Maybe if Teresa hadn't fallen into barbarism the state of virginia wouldn't be doing it either.

I was about to address the death penalty until I saw this:

The USA executes more criminals than any country on Earth, except for those who execute more? :eye-poppi

This is internet comedy at its finest.

I get your point but, on the other hand, no one can complain when the US is put into the same catagory as Iran, China, Saudi Arabia. Not really something to be proud of.

Plus, when you think about what you're saying it is just as silly. "We're number 195 out of 200 (give or take) countries! Yay, us!"

Hmm. The OP seems to suggest murder is bad. This woman being executed is herself a murderer. I guess an execution after a trial is much worse, somehow, then citizens just killing each other?

The idea that capital punishment violates human dignity and human rights in the way that other forms of state punishment do not, is itself pretty ridiculous hypocrisy. Taking away all of someone's property, autonomy, and liberty is perfectly respectful of human dignity and human rights, but going one step further and actually ending their life does not? By what standard?

So, I'm guessing that you are against the death penalty?

You do understand that Virginia /= the US, right? And that Virginia's laws are those desired by Virginia's voters, right? So why do you hate democracy?

I would think our continued habit of extraordinary rendition would be a better basis for criticizing our human rights than the execution of a murderer.

Officially executed more of its own. Murder is the unlawful killing of someone.

Methinks the OP came out of some other forum with a head of steam, It Having Been Agreed As Bad.

The USA shouldn't be put in the same category as Iran or a similar country because they execute gays one of whom was 13 and had done the gay sex act when he was 10. They hung a 16 year old girl who was caught necking with her boyfriends hand up her dress. Other crimes such as witchcraft carrry a death penalty in countries like Iran.

In America you can only be executed for murder if the murder is committed under aggravating circumstances. You get several appeals which you don't get in Iran. I'm not sure about China.

Georgia, USA executed a man for kidnapping, raping and strangling an 11 year old girl to death. Well duh.

I think here's a good rule of thumb to whether the death penalty is limited enough:
Would lethal force be justified to stop the crime that the convict is being executed for?
If so, then it's probably not human rights abuse.

There are some topics in religion and politics and social issues where I think some people care more about the surge of adrenaline they get from being (what they perceive) as right on a moral issue rather than actually persuading others to come around to their POV and I think some anti-death penalty proponents can be classified as such. Honestly, does the OP in this thread actually persuade anyone to come to the posters POV? If it does, is that number of people larger than the number of people driven away from that posters POV by how obnoxiously the POV is presented? I just don't see it.

I begin with the premise that one ought not willfully take the life of a defenseless human being. The death penalty is such a practice. It naturally follows that we ought not engage in executing people.

Seems pretty simple. Can someone point out any errors I've made?
