This radical well known African American Bishop said on the pulpit how horrible homosexuality was. Guess what?

I'm old so my information may be dated but when I was young I was told that people who spoke against homosexuality had a tendency to be gay themselves and stories like this seem to bear that theory out. Ted Haggard did the same thing but at least he had the decency to have relations with a grown man.

At what point do we officially change the standard definition of sexual crusader to "one who avidly engages in that which he/she rails against?"

Surely this is the final straw which will force the many congregations of nodding and "praising" churchgoers to finally realize that they are dealing with simple human nature, after all, and not some crafty, sinuous plot hatched by the the Master Deceiver.

It probably is a bit of a stretch to call it a pattern, but the situation does seem to exist, and may not be that illogical. People who are strongly attracted to things that they believe are secutively evil are more prone to be intimidated by their existence (gambling addicts fighting casinos etc).

I did hear one fundy preacher quite candid about this years ago in a radio interview. He opposed 'gay friendly' programs in schools and explained that as a young man he had very confused feelings about his sexuality and would easily have been 'tempted' if it were more socially acceptable. (This ignores the problem of what was so evil about that temptation, but at least shows a level of honesty).

If I'm not mistaken this same man was raising Hell against a trend where young gay couples were buying homes in predominately black neighborhoods here in the Atlanta, ga area. He was completely hostile to them. Legally there was nothing he could do and the neighborhood was divided on the issue. I'm almost sure this is the same man.

The article you referenced spoke about the anti-gay feeling prevalent among African-American communities. Not that they are alone - it seems to be prevalent in many other "same type" communities. I'm old enough to remember when childhood jibes of "You're a poof!" in WASP communities were meant to be the ultimate insult. Maybe not all communities have absorbed and accepted homosexuality at equal rates?

More likely though, my impression is most of these self-styled moral leaders tend to want to turn back the clock to a non-existent rosy past, to before they made their own moral mistakes they want to cover up.

This approach presents being gay as a choice, and as a sinful choice, so I think these schmucks treat being gay the same as being an alcoholic where they might 'fall off the wagon' and make mistakes which can promptly be forgiven.

Well, there is such a thing as confirmation bias and I doubt a rigorous statistical analysis has been done or is even possible.

Regarding Eddie Long, a third man has since come forward.
I also read that he took these kids on his private jet.
Wasn't there something in the Bible about rich men and camels?

I predict that most members of his "flock" will forgive him or believe him and that his life as a preacher will go on.

Here I am listening to a hardcore gangster-like Christian telling me, unsolicited, about how men struggle with homosexuality. Needless to say, I was convinced after that most people are "more than meets the eye".

I often wonder if these hard shell fundys have troubles in other areas? When they spout creationist nonsense does some part of them feel that evolution makes at least a bit of sense? Is at least some of the things in the bible less than morally correct? Things like that.

or at least that's the kind of rationalizing drivel that I think Long's followers will come up with in a lame effort to defend him. That's what always seems to happen when these true believers are confronted with something so shockingly inconsistent with what they've been told.
