Slightly off topic, but the NY Times had an article about Muslims in Manhattan in which it was pointed out that there was a Muslim prayer room in the World Trade Center.
Those protesting the proposed cultural center, while fully within their rights to do so in whatever (legal) way they see fit, are morons.

I don't want to re-start a discussion that was done to death in another thread, but it's not the same thing: it's like the difference between happening to having an American culture house in Hiroshima before it were bombed, and deliberately opening a Disneyland park there afterward.

Somehow I can't help but suspect that had the towers been attacked by radical christian fanatics, we'd not see folk rushing out to burn their bibles. As much as I think humans need to refrain from projecting non-evidence based value into material objects, I think this act screams of hypocrisy. And I don't think it will result in any good. Why? Well, because it's unlikely murderously-inclined Christians or Americans will threaten to kill people in return.

They are simply cowards: when someone threatens insensate, violence, they "discover" they don't really have the right to do something after all.

Well, yes and no. Islam certainly isn't a "religion of peace" but Islam's "surrender" means surrender to the will of God -- hardly a novel or necessarily violent concept in religion. In any case it means little. "Pravda" means "truth" -- hardly means the Stalin-era newspaper was accurate on the facts.

Again, true, but it doesn't necessarily mean "peace" for Muslims means that other people surrender. The linguistic similarity between "surrender" and "peace" in Arabic comes simply from the fact that Arabic (like Hebrew) has relatively few root words in the language and thus many words that are completely different in English "use" the same root in Arabic.

In Hebrew, for example, both "Shalom" (peace) and "Tashlum" (payment) come from the same root -- SLM -- which literally means "whole" (in the sense of "unbroken"). Is that proof Jews are greedy, who only consider it real peace if people pay them? No, it's just that both words have an etymological connection to "wholeness" (in time of peace things aren't deliberately broken, and when you pay someone what you owe they are "whole" again financially).

Similarly in Arabic "peace" and "Surrender to God" both are related to "wholeness" -- in the latter case in the sense of being wholly dedicated to God.

It's not that people who use these words THINK about them this way, just like someone who uses the word, say, "homosexual" in English doesn't THINK "Same [Greek root] biological sex, esp. sex act, as opposed to love or lust [Latin root]". My point is precisely that they DON'T think about the etymological relationship 99% of the time, and that etymological relationship has no particular "deep meaning" to the speaker nor "shows" something about Arabic (or English) users.
