A Qur'an Got Burnt at 9/11 Mosque Protest

A man burnt a Qur'an today on Ground Zero on the day of the 9/11 attacks. This idiot has stones of steel.:jaw-dropp

I'm certain that the muslim community will come up with a response that is appropriate and proportionate to the initial provocation.

Those protesting the proposed cultural center, while fully within their rights to do so in whatever (legal) way they see fit, are morons.

Muslims therefore would be correct in asking for a NEW prayer room be built in the new WTC.

and yes...they are morons.

And they should have one.

Right next to the christian, jewish, hindu, sikh, shinto, wiccan, native spiritual and fill-in-the-blank-here prayer rooms.

I would be amazed if there were not multi-denominational chapels in the WTC, and due to the ritual washing before prayer, seperate facilities for Muslims makes sense. As for the others, I would imagine that the demographics of the users of the complex would dictate what to include.
It's a business decision, not a political one.

since the towers were owned by the port authority i think they would have to have multi-faith rooms (since separate rooms for every religion is impractical) if they had any chapels at all

but of course which faiths get their own dedicated chapel would be based on demographics and other business concerns

and what if the Muslims are the only ones who want a prayer room?

remember, Silverstein leases the property. he can give rooms to whomever he likes.

Big deal. It's a book. I'm pretty sure there are more copies.

This is what the folks screaming about 'book burnings' seem to miss. The historic book burnings were specifically to remove public access to the contents of the books.

Burning a single, legitimately purchased copy of a book published in the millions is a political statement and in no possible way an attempt at censorship.

I consider book burning to be a statement of hatred and even violence, against those they do not like or disagree with.

There are better ways to express one's concerns or even dissagreements, without burning the words of those you don't like.

Should "Mein Kampf" be burned? No. It should be shunned.

Prayer rooms are non-denominational, anyone can use them to pray to whatever god they choose.

I guess not.

I guess what you really wanted to say was that you want the Qur'an burner to be thrown a religious opinion on him.

Yep, that must be it. That'll show him.

I think perhaps what was meant was the common American misconception of a Fatwa - a death sentence pronounced by a Muslim cleric upon someone for a perceived or actual insult to Islam, a'la Salmon Rushdie. (sp?)

At leaset, that is MY misconception of the term.

I think the misconception has been pointed out here. Demanding that someone admit their ignorance on it seems pointless, but I don't know the backstory.

He's not chasing an admission of ignorance, but rather an admission that maybe wishing a death sentence on someone for burning a book is not the most morally correct stance to take.

As far as the act goes, I'm pretty much with PZ Myers: in the context of blaming Muslims in general for 9/11 it's bigotry, but as an act in itself it's just destroying an object and not something to be concerned with.

To: Thunder and other Islamofacist sympathizers:
From: Islamo-Realist (not Islamophobic)

So, what's wrong hating evil?
some aspect of Islamic teachings are outright evil and filthy.
Same is true, in a lesser degree, for every religion. But current version or interpretation of Islam is worse than any other religion. Islamic countries have least human rights and freedom when compared to the West.

and what's is wrong with book burning?
We are not talking about burning all the copies of a book or a library. There is nothing wrong burning just one or two copies of a bad book as symbolic gesture to express once opinion.
Do you believe in the freedom of expression?
We (like minded) are not advocating killing Muslims but exposing the filth of Islam to the ignorants of West.
Unlike Geert Wilder, the Dutch parliment member, I am against baning Quran. But buring couple of copies to make your point is perfectly OK.
We must expose Islamic filthy teachings to the West. So far only 35% of the US population has negative opinion about Islam. We shall make this number to 75% just telling the truth about Mohommad, Quran, Hadith, and Islamic history.
Obama lied in Cairo about Islamic golden age. There is no such thing as Islamic golden age. Islam plundered wherever it went.
Bush lied by saying Islam is a religion of peace.
Iamam Abdul Raoof lied by saying Islam means peach. Islam means surrender.
The word from which the word "Islam" is derived "Salam" means peace. But Islam means surrender, submission. Most Muslims have surrendered their brain.

West has no idea how sick Islam is.
Western gullible, simple, kind heated people has no idea of the Islamic history, Mohammad's sayings and filthy deeds.
Taqya (deception) is prevalent in Islam. Mohammad did it.
Imam Abdul Raoof is applying taqya to fool the West.
Muslims taqya will eat the West alive and West won't even know it.

Muslims can fool the CIA, FBI, NSA, Obama and Bush but they can't fool us the insiders.
We know every genetic code of Islam. We know every neurons of Islamic brain.
Unless West wakes up West will lose.
Death of the Western civilization at the hand of Islamic taqya is quite possible.
Just look at Europe.

The article referred to a specific room for Muslims, as the ritual washing of the hands, face, and feet required a specific sort of washbasin. As I said, even though it was not mentioned, I would be very surprized if a complex of that size didn't have a few chapels in it.

QFT. Why should I care if someone wants to burn their own legitimately purchased property? I'd maybe make an exception if the burning, like hate speech, was very directly leading to violence against the target of the burning, but this doesn't seem to be the case.
