Chilean miners trapped underground until Christmas

I heard on the radio this morning that they haven't told the miners how long they will be there and are debating if they will tell them.

Did anyone else hear the audio of them singing the nation anthem?

I don't mind saying I teared up when I heard that.

I've heard that they've now told them. Not a conversation I would want to be either side of.

It's going to be a tough few months for them.

hopefully they can get some doritos, some ps3s and hdtvs down there soon

I wouldn't mind too much.

This is painful. One of them asked on the phone, will we be rescued for Sept 18th?

NOTE
Sept 18th is Chilean independence day. That day is eagerly expected for the huge celebration country-wide taking place. And this year, the party promisses to be even greater since the country celebrates its 200th anniversary. The poor guys still don't know that they won't be able to celebrate normally, as they wished :(

So send them down some fireworks and booze!

The Daily Mash tends to agree (warning - contains filthy language).

Did anyone notice that the escape bore hole will be 24" diameter? Some of the bigger miners will need to trim down a bit :(

I hope I'm wrong about this but I'm going to predict that not all of them come out of this alive. This has to be absolutely brutal for even a short time but to endure this for four months? That is unbelievable. In addition to the physical rigors, the psychological rigors must be even worse, and of course psychological rigors can have physical effects.

I read that the temperature is over 90 F and the humidity is over 90%. Imagine being able to live your life completely normally except that you have to endure that temperature and humidity 24/7 for four months. That alone would drive lots of people crazy. And the guys in that mine are going to have to endure lots of other things on top of that.

I don't know how cell phones work but is it possible to lower cell phones to let them talk to their families? If so then they ought to do it in an effort to help them keep their sanity. But I'm guessing the signal can't get through all that rock.

I have the same concerns. Nobody have talked about it yet, but, what if a sudden illness that requires urgent surgery?. What if an apendicitis?. Or on a smaller scale, what if a toothache?

I think we can only hope that nothing that urgent happens, almost all miners are young and healthy. They may be able to endure.

They already are in permanent contact with the surface through a wired telephone. They have talked to authorities and family members, communications are not a big problem.
