Merged Obama enters GZ Mosque debate

Islam was fully in control. And to demonstrate Islam's power over everyone else, they destroyed the Christian Church of St Vincent's and built a mosque, named the Cordoba Mosque, over the ruins to commemorate their victory over the Christians. It signified successful conquest and soon became the second most important religious site in the Muslim world.

Actually, Abd ar-Rahman bought the former Visigothic church that he built the Great Mosque of Cordoba on. As in, paid money to the owners for the property. 100,000 dinars, in fact.

Your entire frothing rant is (as is usual for you) built around a falsehood.

The Hagia Sophia was converted into a mosque after the conquest of Constantinople.

As a completely random note: I was watching Glenn Beck last night (I know, but I was too lazy to turn off the tv) and he was talking about mosques being built on top of churches and what not and mentioned Istanbul/Constantinople. So now Beck gets props for putting a classic TMBG song in my head last night... even if the rest of his spiel was crap.

Yeah, dude. Thanks for planting the ear worm in my head...

[Walks away muttering ,"You can't go back to Constantinople, no you can't go back...]

1.a person who disagrees with BeAChooser.

American Extremist Alan Colmes was on Fox News last night and agreed with the gist of Rauf's comments on 9/11 and Iraq sanctions.

Ok - if Alan Colmes is an extremist, Rauf is an extremist, and Osama Bin Laden is an extremist - then I think the term has less meaning.

What about the day he was in the convenience store after a taping, looking for some munchies and when scanning the available flavours of Doritos, elected to forgo his usual straight "cheese" flavour and pick up EXTREME cheese Doritos?

Cause I bet that's up there in the annals of Colmes extreme-ness. Maybe a close 2nd to the day he listened to Extreme's "More Than Words" on repeat 12 times in a row!

The anti-anti-mosque crowd are the extremists and the practitioners of hate:

Here's a thought: The 70% of Americans who oppose what amounts to an Islamic Niketown two blocks from ground zero are the real victims of a climate of hate, and anti-Muslim backlash is mostly a myth.

The whole "mosques built on top of churches" bit is hilarious. Half the cathedrals in southern Spain are built on top of former mosques. If you climb to the top of the bell tower in the Catedral de Sevilla you can tell exactly where the minaret was lopped off and the bell tower put in.

In fact, the Cordoba cathedral itself used to be known as the "Great Mosque of Cordoba," and if you ever visit (highly recommended) the Muslim architecture is rather obvious. The Great Mosque itself was built upon the site of a Visigothic church - but unlike the Catholics, the Emir bought the property for the purpose.

yes. those of us who stand up against intolerance and bigotry directed against Muslim-Americans, are the real haters here.

those of us who want the 1st Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America to be respected without regard to religion or stereotypes, are the true haters here.

Don't be confused. It is very common for certain religious folks to claim "persecution" because they are not allowed to use government resources to promote their religion...or, in this case, prevent others from practicing theirs.

Nothing new here.

Indeed. One of the hallmarks of the Tea Party, these anti-mosque protestors and Movement Conservatism more generally is an acute feeling of victimhood. Poor Goldberg - people are saying such nasty things about him!!

I thought the Tea-Baggers were all about respecting the Constitution?

I guess not when Muslims are involved.

And once they are gone, we Jews will be next.

Only BaC could take this statement and believe it was written by extremists

The name Cordoba was chosen carefully to reflect a period of time during which Islam played a monumental role in the enrichment of human civilization and knowledge. A thousand years ago Muslims, Jews, and Christians coexisted and created a prosperous center of intellectual, spiritual, cultural and commercial life in Cordoba, Spain.

Only BaC could carry a 1200 year old grudge regarding a church he has probably never seen in a country he is neither a citizen of nor a resident. How can actions in place and time so far removed by a people so distant from modern America be used to claim that a muslim community center is insensitive? The goal of the modern Cordova initiative is outlined on their website in plain english and are not the ones you would like to twist them into BaC.

Going through the complete history of man you will find that christians and muslims, have in the name of their religion, done a lot of horrible things to each other. Holding on to crusade era atrocities is rather silly.

If they named it the "Muslims love America Community Center" would you drop your objection?

I bet they can win over the right wing if they name it the "Ronald Reagan Community Center".

All this talk about sacred ground reminds me that St Peter's in Rome was built on the grave sites of plenty of non-Christians from the Circus. How dare those Christians defile the 1st Amendment rights of the Romans and not consider their feelings by building that monstrosity of a church right on their graves. Where is the respect?
