So where is everyone who's not staying at the Hilton planning to spend the night? The Hilton is a bit pricy, and I'm sure there's others looking for something cheaper than £160 a night. I also know there have to be less expensive Hotels in the area.

So any suggestions for nearby hotels are more than welcome ...

We'll be staying at the Novotel Paddington. It's far from cheap, but close to the Hilton and we've been there before and liked it.

I tend to book for price first when it comes to a place to stay. I'd be fine with staying in hostels, but I don't sleep well in dorms, so need a private room... enter what looks like a hostel with doors... Bonus points that it's close by, near Paddington, etc.

I'm not likely to complain for £40 a night.

Sadly, no availability for the entire duration of my stay though (thu-mo). On to the next one I suppose ...

There seem to be a lot of these little places in the area; not super well publicized. Check out http://www.hostelworld.com/ - I found what seems like a nice private room in Paris for a couple nights following TAM. They seem to have some decent looking options including single private suites.

Check the reviews though, because some of those places sound like real crappy places.
I'm checking them now, and so far the Smart Hyde Park View looks like the best by far ...

Oh yeah, I spent a couple hours reading reviews on a bunch of places before picking my Paris room. I expect about half and half good vs. bad reviews if it's going to be a decent place... If it's all bad or all good, I get suspicious.

I do like the shocked and offended reviews of £40 rooms; people who expect to have a suite in the Hilton for the price, complain that the staff couldn't speak the guest's language, etc...

I didn't check the map, but just entered "Paddington" in the search, and found a surprisingly good sounding one;

For what is worth, last year for TAM London 1, I stayed at Ascott Hyde Park Hotel for 112 pounds a night (booked through hotels.com - today increased to 137).

It's a very small hotel, rooms are no bigger than 9 square meters (plus bathroom), but good enough to crash at night. The good thing is that it is half a block away from Paddington Station and it offers free wireless internet.

No problems whatsoever, well except for rather noisy neighbors one night.

BTW, I hate you all :o

EDIT: Just checked at their official website (link above), and for the days of the conference they have rates as low as 55 pounds a night. Hurry up.

Don't forget to check out the Travelodge and Premier Inn websites. You can often get a room for around thirty quid per night in the city, if they've got a sale on.

@Aepervius Current rate is 346 € for two nights. As I said, it's not cheap...

I'm staying at the Winrose Hotel located just 300m from Hilton Metropole, £50 for a night, free WiFi and mostly ok to good reviews. Might be worth checking out :)

I just booked a 4-bed private room at the Generator Hostel in central London for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday night of TAM London (15, 16 and 17 October). This hostel has been awarded the HostelBookers 2010 award for excellence - read the reviews here: http://is.gd/ea9D7. It's 2 miles / 3 km from the TAM venue (40 minutes walk) and 1/2 mile / 1 km from Euston Square tube station, which has a direct connection to Edgware Road, the tube station next to the venue.

I thought it would be fun to share a private room with other TAMmers rather than sleep in a dorm with random people. So I'm looking for 3 other people who are interested in sharing. I'd prefer to find people who want to stay there all 3 nights. So if you'd like to join me, or know other people who might be interested, please let me know. The cost per person for the 3 nights is £70 (!) or approx. 85 euros / $110, including breakfast, so it sounds like an absolute bargain to me!

Here's the site of the hostel itself: http://www.generatorhostels.com/en/london
As it's a hostel, bear in mind that you would need to bring your own towel, soap and a padlock for a luggage locker, and maybe a dressing gown (bathrobe) and slippers for the off-suite showers.

Please contact me by email at jimadept [at] gmail [dot] com rather than by PM here, thanks!

I'll post here when all the places have gone.

Great idea - I hadn't really thought of the shared-private rooms; even if you don't get three people to share, it might not be all that bad.

I initially read that as "off-SITE" ... run down the corner to a separate building with the showers.

Well I hope I can find 3 people, otherwise it will be an expensive stay! I'm friendly, clean and I only snore very occasionally...

Off-suite is kind of a made-up opposite of en-suite. What they mean is there's some shared toilets and showers down the corridor! But definitely ON-site!

I guess some earplugs would also be useful (apart from for the snoring!) - cramming a whole load of young people under one roof is not a recipe for a quiet night.

I suppose I should try to get some people to vouch for me - Brandon, are you around? Or maybe this fellow, with whom I recently had dinner:

Well, I've shopped around for the cheapest rates.

As a result, I'm staying at Kings Cross Travelodge on Thursday Night,
Marylebone Travelodge on Friday and Saturday Night, then Tower Bridge Travelodge on Sunday night, and Finally Liverpool street Travelodge on Monday Night.

I just booked three nights (Thursday - Sunday) at the Olympic house hotel, a ten minute walk from the Hilton. €315 for three nights, breakfast buffet included, and fairly good reviews on hotels.com.

So I'm a bit late in looking for a hotel it seems, and lots of places are fully booked. Just looking for a cheap place nearby to crash for the Saturday->Sunday night.
I guess going back to Oxford is cheapest but afraid that will interfere either with having fun or 4+ hours of sleep. :)
Any tips? Willing to share a room as well...
