Evidence for why we know the New Testament writers told the truth.

And the evidence for all of this is . . . ?

My evidence actually one time existed, but once the Christians came to power in the Roman Empire, they destroyed my evidence, haven't you ever heard of the burning of the library of Alexandria? My evidence, the works of Celsus, and other Christian critics, were in that library. Oh but it wasn't just that library, by Decree of Theodosius, all "pagan" temples were to be destroyed... temples where countless documents were kept.

Wow, we are so lucky that oral tradition has preserved the truth.

Alexandria? Never heard of it.

Now . . . I'll ask you again, if all of the evidence was destroyed on the orders of Theophilus in 391 CE, how do you know what that evidence was purported to show?

I think I saw that story on the Hallmark chanel once...or was it the Christian porn channel? I can't remember.

Do you have a date for the burning of the library and the documents that showed Jesus to be a Roman Bastard?

if the Church wanted to hush up Celsus did they not go about it a rather strange way???, ie. by repeating and discussing his arguments at length and answering them in Origen's Contra Celsus? You may read them to this day here ...

http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/0416.htm

Or read them in Libanius' version --

Mind you avoid that modern "reconstructiion" of Celsus published a few years ago - it was dreadful.

Also, logically, do you find the best way to suppress a book to burn down a library? If ther was one manuscript it might work: but all my experience of the classical world sugget manuscripts were copied and ddiseseminated. So why burn down a library to destroy one book? Why not just burn the book? :)

Secondly, a simple question, when was the Library fo Alewxandria burned exactly?

Thirdly, have you actually read the decree of Theodosius???

oh, the Panthera stuff? Babylonian Talmud. We mentioned it in passing earlier - its generally not considered to have historical value as it postdates the period, but hey, I'll happily discuss it. :) It the Yeshu//Yeshua stuff I mentioned in response to the anti-missionary Jewish chap's writing that were linked before.

Back in the years 101 - 200 A.D. the church wasn't quite 'that' influential yet, I'm sure later on had he spoken out like this he would've been condemned a heretic and executed as such.

reconstruction lad, not the actual work.

It wasn't just one book, it wasn't just one library, no... it had to be all things Pagan. By decree of the most honorable Theodosius! Oooh but it did not end there, the destruction of anything pagan continued for 1,100 years, anything that survived was lucky to have done so.

It matters not the exact destruction of the library of Alexandria, what matters is that countless artifacts were lost between the era 300-1600 A.D. all thanks to the intolerance of one religion, who did not even care so much for their historical value. And that's not to include what the Muslims destroyed...

My heart weeps at such losses... and that's a fairly brief history of book burnings.

The New Testament left out the part that Mary had consorted with a Roman soldier called Panthera, and that Joshua her son from these consorts was later found out to be the son of a Roman soldier called Panthera and was hanged as such.

So, are you going to present any evidence for this or not?

Which has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

???
But..
Lots of stuff have been destroyed, both before and after christ, which is proved. There is no proof of the roman soldier story, and that proves that.... Wait.

:D

Where did this Panthera story come from ? I seem to have read it somewhere that it was just a Pagan response to the christian claim of the virgin birth.

I don't know if Pagan is quite right. As far as I know it was made up writen down based on previous oral traditions by some Jewish dudes living in Babylon in about 500 CE.

I don't think it contains any evidence that the New Testament writers were telling the truth.

Well the date does matter when you claim that the story of Jesus being the son of a Roman soldier was lost when the library was burned. The library was burned before Jesus was born. It brings your credibility into question when you claim the date does not matter.

True. But books have been burned more than once by the church throughout it's history.
