Iran to stone adulterer who confessed after torture.

Anybody else notice how quickly the "Hate America First" people changed the subject, pushing the equivalence of "due Process" between confession by torture and Judicial knowledge vs. a string of lawyers, years of appeals, and judicial review by numerous judges.
Then there's excusing Islam for doing things that Christians quit doing a century or more ago...

Let's hope nobody else noticed because it only happened in your head.

Nobody said torture or stoning was OK. At any point.

Countries that torture people are bad.
Countries that execute people are bad.

What sticks a bit is people living in a country that tortures and executes saying that we should ban people immigrating and/or referring to other nations as savages because they torture and execute (regardless of whether its different or not).

Thanks for clarifying your point and taking a brave stand against torture & stoning. :P

OK seriously, I see what you mean, but I would not go as far as to agree with your two statements about countries being bad. Things are rarely so black & white. I do not think this news story means that Iran is a bad country. I do think that it indicates their legal system could benefit a good overhaul.

Countries are made up of people, some good, some bad. Those people create governments. Governments are made up of policies, some good, some bad. I would be very surprised to see a country or government that was wholely good or bad. Any given country will have done actions both good & bad, I suppose.

The practice of stoning is terrible, regardless of who says that.

Who claimed it to be OK?

i especially made a new topic for general debate about Death penalty, so this thread stays on topic, torture and stoning for adultery. which is not only not OK it is horrible in several ways.

Well, to be sure, no one said it was OK, and I meant that part of my post to be a lighthearted summation of the direction I saw the thread going in. :)

Almost immediately in this thread, some members started to compare this case in Iran to the policy of the US on capital punishment. My comment was based on the idea that the comparison implies a certain amount of acceptance of the stoning based on moral relativism. If I am right about that or not is debateable, but such comparison posts are off topic regardless.

As you say, you started another topic to help keep this thread focused, and I applaud you for that.

Last, I apologize to any that took my post as insulting or hostile. It was not intended to be so. :)

While I agree that this thread went off the original topic, I can't agree with how you phrased this.

I don't think this sort of thing is the inevitable result of Islam, either. There are many different sects Islam.

So maybe we should leave the generalized statements about the Islamic faith out of this, unless you can show objectively that this court ruling is the sort of thing that would be universally approved by all who practice the islamic faith. (hint: I can objectively prove it it is not.)

When good people do nothing they're bad too.

Sorry, don't need any platitudes today. Try down the street. :P

Seriously though, I am not sure what you really mean to say to me here. Could you elaborate please?

On the face of it, this statement would seem to indicate that you think all people are bad. I think that is an over-simplfication.

Why is it a backwards practice? Just because you say so?

Anyway, lethal injection for adultery would be preferable to stoning. But it would still be outrageous that those savages would be executing a woman for adultery. In case you haven't figured it out, adultery is a far cry from murder.

I consider it outrageous that the savages in the US execute people.
The fact that execution is less humane, and imposed for other crimes in other places has no bearing on that.

lol!

This thread went from: "torture & death by stoning is bad" to: "torture & death by stoning is OK, because the USA is bad."

Un-be-leivable!.

The only accurate part of your post is that last word: it is unbelievable because nobody said any such thing.

Well, you did not qute my whole post, and I feel the part you did quote sounds different out of context,. None the less, it is true that no one actually said that torture was OK. I did not intend for people to take that statement so literally.

Here is how I explained it in post #123 above:

No, I didn't, but am happy to take the credit.

If you read my last post more carefully, you will see that I was qoting my own answer to another person who made the same point you did. Please just disregard the parts that do not apply to you. :)

Iranians stone women for adultery.

Americans throw young men into prison for low-level drug possession, where they are raped, tortured, and turned into useless souls that know only crime and despair.

I thought my meaning was obvious. When decent people allow evil to occur by doing and saying nothing they are almost if not as guilty as the evil doers.
