Merged Depleted uranium

holy thread zombie batman...this old jem?

the health benefits of deptleted uranium and the irrationality of those that won't sprinkle the stuff on thier breakfast cereal :)

So if I understand this correctly the half-life of a DU thread is 3½ years?

No, you are off by about a factor of a billion. If it had a half life of 3.5 years it would be highly radioactive. More like 4.5 billion years for the U238 that is most of it.

Wow! I wonder how long this thread will be in 4.5 billion years!

Woosh!

He asked about DU threads, not DU.

bah...in the end its just a marketing issue

change DU's name to harmlesite.

I do live a few miles away from a coal burning power plant.

Based on the predicted combustion of 2516 million tons of coal in the United States and 12,580 million tons worldwide during the year 2040, cumulative releases for the 100 years of coal combustion following 1937 are predicted to be:

U.S. release (from combustion of 111,716 million tons):

Uranium: 145,230 tons (containing 1031 tons of uranium-235)

Thorium: 357,491 tons

Worldwide release (from combustion of 637,409 million tons):

Uranium: 828,632 tons (containing 5883 tons of uranium-235)

Thorium: 2,039,709 tons

why are you spreading irrational fear among people who may choose to put topsoil or sawdust on thier cereal?

So it's a deliberate choice to make a disingenuous argument and not just because it's stupid then.

I'm relieved.

For a moment, I actually thought you might really think topsoil or sawdust caused major birth defects and those types of problems, since that is the only way the bat-crap crazy analogy could possibly work. If so, I feared for your sanity.

Well, I wouldn't sprinkle lead in my food either but no one is trying to get lead banned from weapons.

I do remember there being people trying to ban lead shot from duck hunting. Concerns over the amount of lead getting into lakes.

anyone who would object to Topsoil on their cerial is an irrational woo...

There are a **** load of things much more dangerous that you could put on your cereal.

In australia clay pigeon shooting long ago banned lead shot because of the mass of lead building up on the ranges. I rthink quite a few companies now produce lead free shotgun shells....

hey...maybe we could use DU in shotgun shells, after all....the stuff is positively brimming with health advantages.

The use of lead shot for hunting waterfowl was banned by federal regulation in the early 90s, IIRC.

DU shot OTOH...
