The company that brought us new-fangled vacuum cleaners has turned its attention to fans. Dyson has come out with a bladeless fan. There's an impeller in the base which sends air up into the ring. A slit near the leading edge lets the air out where it flows along the airfoil shape.

Has anybody seen one of these in person? Just wondering how well they work, and how quiet they are.

I'd like to see one. I don't find buffeting unpleasant; I like it. Also, I'm not about to replace my current $15 fans with Dyson $500 fans.
 
Oh yeah! I saw these at Best Buy. Expensive as hell, but they're actually really quiet and nifty looking. Not sure how to compare output compared to a blade fan, but I figured out the design after staring at it for a minute. If it were cheaper I'd be tempted to get one. But yeah, it's really quiet.

I have used their hand dryers which I have to say are amazing. They simply dry your hands far quicker than any other hand dryer I have ever used.

But it's not like I had a real issue wth hand drying speed before the invention.

It's hard to get that excited about innovations in hand-drying or face cooling technology.

the dyson site doesnt do a good job of explaining what the fans actually do, i was under the impression it was the same concept as the ionic breeze (but advertised as a fan rather than a purifier)

I wish I hadn't looked at the link. Now I'll be noticing the annoying buffeting of my regular fan.

Ceiling fans actually are nice to have in winter, as it keeps the warm air from accumulating at the ceiling where it doesn't do anyone any good.

Those new jet hand dryers appoearing in bars everywhere are awesome.
 
Now that we've all been "hipped" to the annoying "buffeting" of normal fans, Jimmy Buffet is apt to lose some "fans" himself...Unless these fans are safer for parrots.

(Btw, me no can do Jimmy B. Jimmy H., sure.)

Some of the videos in the second link in my OP give an idea of how it works.

I agree that whatever benefit they provide doesn't seem to justify the cost. My main interest was in wanting a super quiet fan for the bedroom in summer. The oscillating fan I use now makes quite a bit of noise. Ceiling fans are quiet, but I was hoping to avoid one for aesthetic reasons. Right now I'm trying to find a rotary dimmer like this one. Hopefully that will allow me to dial down the fan and make it quieter.

The fans are noisy on fast because you people are idiots. If it isn't roaring, you think something is wrong with it, and don't buy it.

That's also why your defroster or AC on fast in the car is like driving through a car wash. "Huh, defroster is too quiet. Something's wrong with this car. I don't want to buy it."
 
I’ve seen them in person (at my local department store).
They are very nice. They look high tech, do provide a good air flow, and do not have a single exposed moving part that could possibly hurt anyone.
The only downside to them that I can see is they are outrageously expensive. The ones I saw were $200 and felt like they moved less air than the traditional box fan that I paid $16 for.

Focus on the annoying "buffeting" of your primitive fan.

Then, shell out the big bucks.

But wihtout that buffeting I can't talk into the fan and pretend my voice is a space alien's (come on you know everyone liked to do this when we were eight).

Exactly.

I was so into that groovy sound, that I even did it with a lung full of helium.
Talk about alien.


This fan represents something analogous to a Harley that is silent.

What next?
