Merged Gulf oil spill more serious than reported

See Post #55.

ETA: The EPA website has daily air, water and soil testing results.

Hey one post, Yaaaay!!!

It's awful funny that the highest recorded H2S produced by Florida marshes is 65ppb. So thanks for pointing out another probable lie. How can a marsh that has never produced even 100 ppb, create a 1100 ppb level, yet it is impossible (in your mind) that the spill, which has recorded levels of 3000 ppb, was the cause?

I ignored post 55 because it was completely out of context. Trying to say I was contradicting myself was the topic, I didn't understand the relevance. Sounded more like ADHD to me.

You have to do what the rest of us do: take it all in and attempt to make sense of it.

Are you sure? According to aggle-rithm I should close my eyes, plug my ears and tape my mouth shut. Since nobody argued against that logic but me, I figured everyone agreed with that.

Where did he say that? He simply said worrying about things you can't change is a useless endeavor.
I recall a sign on my grandmother's wall when I was a kid
"People have only two things to worry about: They're rich, or they're poor
If they're rich, they have nothing to worry about
If they're poor, they have 2 things to worry about:
They're sick, or they're well
if they're well, the have nothing to worry about
If they're sick, they have 2 things to worry about:
They're going to live, or they're going to die
If they're going to live, they have nothing to worry about
if they're going to die, they have two things to worry about
They're going to heaven, or to hell
if they're going to heaven, they have nothing to worry about
If they're going to hell, they'll be so busy shaking hands with their friends, they won't have time to worry
SO WHY WORRY?"

That isn't what I said, but in your case, it's not a bad idea.

me: "so you recommend closing your eyes so you won't scare yourself?"
you: "that sounds like a good strategy."

That's sounds a lot different than

"take it all in and attempt to make sense of it"

You recommend not taking in it, not thinking for yourself. I guess it becomes a lot easier to be a "skeptic" when you just ignore the problem.

Then holding your ears and saying la la la is not necessary because, apparently, you have no problem ignoring things without holding your ears.

I admit, I added the tape your mouth shut thing, but you're foolish enough to be the first two monkey's, why not be the third also?

I wish life was as easy as this.

And last time I checked it was the people who have the power in America. It's because of people like you and aggle that that is not true anymore. You and him are probably the people who hate protesters, right? You hate people who get involved, who try to make a difference.

You are just fine and dandy with a corporation blocking media from beaches. You're fine with the Coast Guard acting on behave of BP. http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=6496749n&tag=api
You even sound like you're OK with the spill in the first place, no big deal right? Why worry, you're just a powerless douchebag anyway, right? I mean, Grandmas wall hanging said all I really have to worry about is being rich so it must be true.

why are they building relief wells..and not just stopping the leak?

will the relief wells allow them to continue extracting and refining the oil?

I don't "hate" any of these people. However, I recognize that many people who "try to make a difference" do it in a manner that is ineffectual or even counterproductive.

An example would be the crew of the ship on "Whale Wars". These people are clearly passionate about the good work of "saving whales", yet what they actually do mostly is to watch the whales die as they make impotent attempts to interfere with whaling operations. They do raise awareness of the problem, and get famous people to donate money to the cause, but none of this actually stops anyone from killing whales.

Here in Austin, people think they are saving the environment by separating out their garbage so most of it can be recycled. In fact, the materials to be recycled are loaded onto trucks which take it hundreds of miles away to the nearest processing center, adding significantly to the environmental damage the whole operation is meant to combat.

However, these are pretty rational compared to your position, which is to act on disastrous effects of the oil spill that exist entirely in their imagination.

Do not, repeat, do NOT, apply for the MDC. You are a really bad reader of words, much less so of minds.
Worrying about things you cannot change is a sure path to ulcers and other, less obvious disorders.
Worrying about things you don't understand is a really quick way to the world of woo.
Although I have drilled holes in the ground seeking petrochemicals, it was many years ago, and many miles inland from the current crisis. I studied (and am still studying) engineering to get away from that stuff, but I understand the terminology, and have a basic understanding of how it works.. I also know that better expertise than mine is working on the problem, 24/7, and they are doing all that is humanly possible to alleviate it.

I have lived with Hydrogen Sulfide stench in the air, with refineries and active oil wells in my backyard most of my life. That crap is, indeed, nasty **** in big batches and on contact. That's why beaches are closed--to protect well-meaning people who think they know what they are doing, but really haven't a clue.

The people have political power in the US. Mother Nature trumps all that power. The power of wishful thinking, which many uninformed, uninformable and impatient people seem to possess in droves holds absolutely no sway when it comes to the physical sciences.
Panic, as you advocate, is self-defeating

why are they building relief wells..and not just stopping the leak?

Relief wells are how they truly bring the well under control. Other methods would not be fully effective in the long run.
will the relief wells allow them to continue extracting and refining the oil?

If they bring it under control, that should allow re-entering the well later and beginning actual production.

Those folks spent large amounts on drilling that beast, and now have enormous liabilities to pay, it is only reasonable that they should be able to use it's potential output to help recover their costs.

Cheers,

Dave

However, these are pretty rational compared to your position, which is to act on disastrous effects of the oil spill that exist entirely in their imagination.

The benzene and H2S are not in my imagination, they are in the well, being released with the oil. They are tested and confirmed to exist in extremely high concentrations. And only 100 miles away from where I live. It is not irrational to be concerned.

OK, whatever.

Worrying about things you cannot change is a sure path to ulcers and other, less obvious disorders.
I can change where me and my children live and breathe.
Worrying about things you don't understand is a really quick way to the world of woo.
I do understand. Benzene is toxic, benzene is being released from the well, benzene can be carried by the wind. This is not woo, as you say.

Although I have drilled holes in the ground seeking petrochemicals, it was many years ago, and many miles inland from the current crisis. I studied (and am still studying) engineering to get away from that stuff, but I understand the terminology, and have a basic understanding of how it works..
fascinating

I also know that better expertise than mine is working on the problem, 24/7, and they are doing all that is humanly possible to alleviate it.
That doesn't change the fact that toxins are being released into the air that can kill.

So H2S can contaminate the beach air but my house which is 5 miles away from the beach is perfectly safe?

The people have political power in the US. Mother Nature trumps all that power.
I smell a contradiction. You say that I shouldn't worry because geniuses are working on the problem, but then you say mother nature trumps all power. Which is it. Should I not worry because the Govt is involved or should I worry because mother nature may bring a hurricane and blow all those toxins inland?

The power of wishful thinking, which many uninformed, uninformable and impatient people seem to possess in droves holds absolutely no sway when it comes to the physical sciences.
I agree

Panic, as you advocate, is self-defeating
I don't advocate panic nor am I panicking. That would be a strawman. I am concerned, I am proactive, but I am not panicking.

Yes. Well.

Good luck with all...that.

Well, when half the population of Florida starts to drop dead from the dastardly effects of this mythical toxic cloud Without Rights keeps mentioning, we'll see who has the last laugh...

Muhwahahahaha! :D

ETA: Without Rights, are you looking to unload your property for cheap? You see, I know a guy...

No, no, no, you read it all wrong. You're supposed to tape your ears shut and plug your mouth.

Sheesh, get it right!

*Puts physics professor hat on*

Thunder, try standing in front of a fire hose turned on full blast, and try to "just stop the leak" by plugging your finger into the hose.

That should give you some idea of the level of difficulty of the situation.

Can you provide your sources that show that the spill will still be spewing benzene and H2S at lethal levels when it gets to Florida? If you're just using common sense to deduce this, you could very well be mistaken. Most people don't have an appreciation of the scale involved....even a huge amount of oil becomes very thinned out when emptied into a body of water millions of times larger than it's own volume.

So are you saying there is no benzene, h2s and other voc's. Wow, thanks. Now that I know they're mythical I can stay. I was being absurd. Benzene is only on Harry Potter.

Muhwahahahaha! :D
It really wasn't funny enough to toot your own horn.

Sure, 20% below Zillow.

lol
That's stupid. A source that says what? lol

Yeah, Sylvia Brown told me. Moving the goal posts so far that I need a psychic now to prove that IT IS POSSIBLE. Not that it is for sure. I have already explained this. That comment has two fallacious arguments in one. Making it sound as if my position is, that I guaranteed benzene will pollute Florida is a fallacy of extension. And this question definitely is an example of moving the goalpost. So basically you are demanding impossible evidence to support an opinion I don't even hold.

If you're just using common sense to deduce this, you could very well be mistaken. Most people don't have an appreciation of the scale involved....even a huge amount of oil becomes very thinned out when emptied into a body of water millions of times larger than it's own volume.

Was that supposed to educate.

I believe I already said that it will dissipate and some will be filtered out by the water. There is no guarantee that a storm or hurricane won't show up strong enough to bring toxic amounts ashore.
