Insurance Comparison Sites. Help or Hinder?

Do they help you find the best insurance deal or do they just produce products designed to score well on Comparison Sites?
Some insurance companies offer great deals but won't put their products on comparison sites, there must be a reason for this.

Comparison sites get a cut, some companies won't give a cut and stay off. Doesn't mean they are cheaper (or more expensive).

If It helps - I'm a broker (commercial) and I use a comparison site for my own personal insurance, which I organise on-line. Cheap and easy.

I wasn't aware of any sites consolidating insurance quotes (other than Progressive's own version).

That sounds familiar, but I guess I never paid attention to their message.
