Tam 8

All you really need to be able to find is the horse's ass and the Del Mar Lounge.

I'm trying to determine whether or not I should bite the bullet and buy a ticket to TAM 8. I wanted to buy a DVD of a past event to get a glimpse, but I'm not really sure which one to get. The descriptions don't really say much about running time, incomplete guest lists, etc. So I'm not really sure which one was the best to get. I was going to purchase the TAM London DVD that just came out, but it appears their web store is broken at the moment.

Which DVD set that has come out, do you feel best represents TAM? Not just content, but something that hopefully has decent A/V quality also. If anyone has any recommendations it would be greatly appreciated! I've been very impressed with the DVDs available through Richard Dawkins' website, but now that I've gone through all those I've been hoping to find more DVDs with the same consistency in both content and quality.

I've got Tam 5 and Tam 2. Haven't watched #2, to be honest. But 5 has got some great content on it. Penn and Teller, Matt and Trey from South Park, Richard Wiseman. I believe 6 had some audio issues, so I would suggest maybe getting 7. It will give you the most honest view of what a recent TAM is like. I'm looking forward to picking that, and the TAM London DVD in Vegas this year.

Fantastic speakers is really only half the wonderfulness that is TAM. The other half is interacting with the speakers on their down time (Yes, they mingle. A lot.), talking with other people from all over the world who have similar viewpoints as your own, and meeting friends you will likely keep in touch with after you return home. In this group, no one is unfriendly and there is minimal judgement against anyone for personal reasons.

Seconded. TAM8 will be my third TAM and already, I don't come for the speakers anymore. I come for the community and to hang out with friends from the forum.

Honestly? Forget the DVDs. They will not give you a sense of what the event is really all about, which is the sense of community, friendship and fun. The DVDs also don't capture the workshops, the magic shows, the musical performances, the talent shows, the late night bar shenanigans, the parties, the random conversations that lead to enduring friendships, or the general sense of well-being with which one leaves TAM. Just come!

Indeed.

I would go even if I could not afford the conference. Just sleep in the day, and hang out in the bar at night.

I notice that the second half of the final of the World Cup coincides with lunch on the Sunday; is there likely to be somewhere in the hotel to watch it?

Crap! I forgot that TAM overlaps WC.

Yes, it will be on. ESPN/ABC is showing every game. I'll be watching with you.

ETA: I arrive on the 7th. The 2nd semi-final is played that day at 11:30 am. I'll be watching that too.

I am not into football (only 4% of the world's population would call it 'soccer'), but I simply had to take part in betting games in the office, so I am keen to see how it turns out. Just realised yesterday that the final matches are during TAM...

I will also be there (Del Mar), yes, I'll be ..... drinking beer, mind you...

I'm not used to drinking beer in the morning, but 11:30 am Vegas time is late afternoon for me...

EDIT: just noticed that Sunday July 11 is the British Formula 1 Grand Prix. Oh boy, what's the Vegas time for that?.... Zooterkin, help!
