My bible says servant. It uses the 1917 translation, but it seems like the more modern translation says the same.

I really don't understand how you can make such a statement, haven't you read the 9 translations. Go to Gateway or Blue Letter Bible and look at each and every translation for the verse in question Luke 12 47. The great majority use servant not slave.

How many people in here do you think knew this from the book "Introduction to the New Testament" by Raymond E. Brown. (pages 67-68)

"Besides working in business, farming, and households, slaves {under the Roman empire} could be administrators, physicians, teachers, scholars, poets, and accumulate wealth."

Well, you know, DOC, usually translators aren't told what word to use. That's kind of their job, to find out. And the meaning of a word is usually not settled by majority decisions.

Let me just sort this out in my mind: The writers of the NT used the word doulos, but they didn't mean doulos. Why didn't they use a word that means servant instead? Weren't they very good at Greek? What other words might they have been wrong about? All of them? Some of them? Just the one?

And could you please answer this: Why is it alright to beat a servant?

Personally I'd rather get a some lashes and be sore a few days than spend several years in jail like could happen today if a person beat several men and beat several woman like the servant did in Luke 12 47.

And the servant who did nothing wrong (except didn't know what was expected of him) and was beaten for it...

Would you be OK with being lashed for not doing your job when your boss hasn't actually told you what he/she expects you to do?

Some people went nuts in here when I said Sir William M. Ramsay said Gospel writer Luke was a great historian without providing additional info, but joobz gets a free pass and no one but me says a whimper when he continues to state as fact Jesus condones slavery even though 9 English translations say the word is servant (not slave.)

But Jesus was god. Surely he could see the problem the word servant or slave would cause in the 21st century. Why did he not allow for a future culture?

Wow. What an amazing response. First of all, it's obviously a red herring; Jesus didn't say "servants who beat several men and several women will be beaten"; he said "servants who do against the will of their master will be beaten". It's pretty obvious beatings would also follow from crimes lesser than assault.

There's more to the post, though. What DOC is essentially saying is, if he assaulted several people, instead of going to jail, he would prefer to "get a some lashes and be sore a few days".

Well gee, DOC, aren't you the paragon of morality. So you believe the correct sentence for multiple counts of assault is not jailtime, but "some lashes"? Does this apply to all criminals, or just the Christian ones? Or just you specifically?
