Australia

I suppose it's all relative. This is what the 'mericans call a possum:

American Opossum (Yikus bloodyhorrificus)*

* This might be a made-up name. I'd double check, if I were you.

Yup, the one truly hideous marsupial in the world, and we get it. Oh, and I'm pretty sure that Yikus bloodyhorrificus is indeed the correct scientific name for the opossum.

And they taste like...?

Well duh!

If you are a skeptic with the even the most passing interest in Australia, you MUST read Hoax Nation by Simon Caterson.

"The history of Australia reads like the most beautiful lies." - Mark Twain.

Ringtails are eeeeevil over here. They're utterly decimating our native forests and wildlife, particularly the many birds that nest straight on the ground in the open (due to a lack of traditional predators).

In the film The Piano during the opening shots flying over the bush you can see many dead tree branches reaching up into the sky; the result of possums (and an unavoidable historical anachronism!)

Yay for Possum Fur Fashion!

Mum's got a knitted possum fur jacket, and it's gorgeous.

Re: FAIRY BREAD

I was SHOCKED to discover that this is only an australia thing. I got heckled performing stand up comedy in Edinburgh but managed to win the heckler around (a fellow aussie) by discussing our mutual love of fairy bread.

Don't forget the mob across the ditch! They share our well-developed taste for haute cuisine.

:NEWZEALAND:

I continue to hold the unproved opinion that fairy bread is only fattening if you use full-fat butter.

Also, everything used to make fairy bread (sugar, food dyes, margarine, bread) is vegetarian and therefore not fattening by definition.

So sayeth me.

Now can I have some?

Good heckles?

The reason that it isn't fattening is that it has no nutritional value whatsoever.:D

J/K

I suppose not. :D

And, upon reflection, I don't see much difference between fairy bread and white bread spread with butter and honey or jam, calorie- and (lack of) nutrient-wise.

It's just that I don't think of candy sprinkles as being good for much of anything except a few on a cupcake.

Our kids are raised on this stuff.

And Vegemite.

And drop-bear steaks.

ETA: Uncoloured sprinkles, i.e. plain sugar pillules, are the basis of most homeopathic remedies. They cost cents to make a kilogram, and tens of dollars to sell a dozen pillules. NOW can we see why homeopaths don't want to give up their business?

I shall now think of homeopathic pills as fairy medicine.
