which apartment?

2) Raffaele pricked Meredith's finger with the tip while they were cooking together at his apartment.

Now, we have very little reason to believe Meredith was ever at his apartment. That scenario is therefore a fabrication.

IIRC, Raffaele only says that they were cooking together, not where. Sorry, coffee break over...

He claims to be a journalist. What professional journalist reports on a case under a fake name?

That's an honorable tradition going back to Ben Franklin. It is even more common when you get to the distinction between journalists and bloggers ans some that maintain both roles.

Does Ann Wise, Barbie Nadeau, Nick Pisa, Andrea Vogt, to name just a few, cover the case under a fake name? Frank has also claimed this to be his real name to various media outlets, such as the the Seattle Times and the BBC.

And understand...we've not even got past the guy's name yet.

Understand, he's also being paid...by an 'American firm'. He's very coy about saying exactly who, but I think we can all guess.

It is nice to be paid for your work. Has Frank been on the dole since November of 2007? Does being paid equal being paid to be dishonest? Your argument here is weak. Get past the name game and give me some dishonest examples of reporting please.

If he's being paid from the Knox side of things, he's not being paid to be honest, is he?

As for the reporting, as I said, perform a search on PMF (limit the search there to the Murder of Meredith Kercher subforum) and TJMK.

It is a little hard to see who other than the Knox camp would have an interest in anonymously funding pro-Knox blog. Anyway, doubtless for what ever reason he isn't about to tell us who his sponsor is.

When Frank Sfarzo, creator of the Perugia Shock blog, heard about Meredith, he was living in Florence. A doctor's son who'd grown up in Rome, he knew the house at Via della Pergola and had never liked its location, because it's on a narrow traffic-clogged street. He could easily visualize a car crashing through the guard railings and knocking into the front windows.

The Meredith mystery drew him back to Perugia, because he recognized the types of people caught in the crosswinds. They were familiar from his college years at the University of Perugia. He had even lived in the same dorm as Raffaele Sollecito, one of the three suspects, but years apart. He knew what the students were like, from the expensively educated English girls to the strivers handing out fliers on the Corso to publicize the local bars.

"These were my people," he says. "I had to write about them."

He thought at first Perugians would want to contribute, would want to feed him information and photographs. But they did not. After a while he started writing the posts only in English. Then the blog took off, finding an eager audience in the United Kingdom and the U.S., oceans away from Perugia and its cold stone walls.

A firm funds something because it expects a return on its investment. One therefore has to ask, what return is it exactly this firm is expecting on a free blog written by an Italian blogger in Italy. What is the 'product'? It can only be the content, content which has no financial value, but certainly has value in regard to a propaganda campaign.

RoseMontague,

you've read the whole of the article I presume? This is a nasty grubby business in which people continue to do nasty grubby things.

That's how it started (maybe). It was about 6 - 8 months after that Frank's blog which had hitherto been neutral and certainly could not be described as sympathetic to Knox or Sollecito went through a sudden change. Let's just say, Frank was 'approached'. Frank accepted. Although, since that time there has certainly been ups and downs in their relationship.

Indeed. And that article lays out only the tip of the iceburg. It's all a very long story, which is why I'm not laying it all out here. The history of it (or at least, most of it...not all the behind the scenes stuff) is laid out on the Web and Net and is a matter of record.

I will say, in the first 6 - 8 months of the case, before Frank's sudden turn, the co-Administrator of PMF Skeptical Bystander (Margaret Ganong) even wrote an article for Frank and remains on his blog to this day and she was his editor for a few months, helping him tidy up his stories in English. PMF and Frank Sfarzo know each other very well.

I see nothing wrong with blogging about something you believe in and getting paid for it at the same time. I think that is a great job to have. Good for Frank, as far as I am concerned. I have seen nothing that would cause me to doubt his honesty. I do not agree with all of his opinions.

Even if he's being paid by Gogarty Marriott, is not declaring it and at the same time is claiming to be a neutral journalist? You have no problem with the ethics of that? And you see that as having no impact on the honesty of his reporting?

RoseMontague,

What are your thought on the rest of the article about the blog wars, people getting harassed etc? My view is that if we are committed to a position where everybody is nice and good and in it for the right reasons then you can almost always find excuses for people, but it doesn't make it so. As starting assumptions go, this isn't a bad one, I started with it, but it's still a starting assumption and it isn't necessarily so.
