Evidence for why we know the New Testament writers told the truth.

This thread lacks boobies I say.

Here, all better. Boobies.

Both boobies seem to be on drugs. On different ones though. Look at those eyes!

To improve my history of crap comments in this thread: Can someone recommend me reading material on the creation of biblical canon?

I know this thread is starting to sound like an advertisement for Bart Ehrman, but his intro to the NT is pretty easy to read, for a college text.

It is somewhat expensive, so if you have a good library near by, I would check there first. The reference librarian may have some good recommendations as well.

They turned them all gay? Awesome.

Hi Chris.

Waenre, Class Clown, at your service.

That would've been cute; Jewish guys do it for me.

p.s. Chris, are you new to the thread? If so, welcome to the loony bin. If not, I apologize that I missed your earlier post(s).

I'm new! Relatively, that is. I suppose there are newer people, but this happens to be one of my interests. I only got to about page 60 of this thread before I just decided to skip to ~10 pages before the last page.

It's easy for a thread like this to turn into Ehrmanfest (this, by the way, needs to be a thing) since he's so dam' good at what he does. His books are also enjoyable to read. God's Problem was probably my favorite, but I'll keep that for another time.

Well then, a belated welcome to the forum and here's your obligatory straight jacket that you'll need if you hang out in this thread too long.

Why keep your review of "God's Problem" for later...it's not like there's a real topic going on at the moment. All of DOC's points have been refuted and we're just keeping the place warm in case he or someone else actually manages to bring in something worth discussing.

Who Wrote The New Testament the making of the christian myth, by
-Burton L. Mack- Godless by Dan Barker. The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins. among many others. John Shelby Spong, although still claims to be a christian but writes otherwise is also a good source, he has many books available, the better one would be........Saving The Bible From Fundamentalists That book is a little long in the tooth, perhaps his second last.........Jesus For The Non-Religious is a good bet. But remember, Spong is a retired bishop, in saying that he finds it hard to become a fully fledged atheist which he is by reading between the lines.

I'm convinced. Off to the library for me tomorrow, I think. I may as well start learning about some of this stuff in case DOC asks me a tricky question.

*snork*
A tricky question like "what is 2+2"? Or a tricky question like "what is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow"?

I think he meant a "Tricky" question like how many moderators does it take to change a light bulb.

Be quiet you before I have to hit you with "Misquoting Jesus". :p :D
I really like his writing style. Can I apply for membership to the fanclub?

I just love the book; it's much more personal than his others. Compared to Jesus, Interrupted or his other books o' Apocrypha, this one's more like a biography. He talks about his realization that the Bible doesn't seem to answer the most important question, which is "why do we suffer?" There are, according to Ehrman, three different responses usually given, and usually all three are lumped together to form an uber-reason, much like the Gospels are all lumped together sometimes. In either case, it makes no sense whatsoever. I wish I had more time to wax on (and I will later!) but I have an exam coming up.
:boxedin:

To be honest; I believe that Jefferson's Bible was based only on the gospels which only represent a small portion of the whole Bible, so the 800 verses probably represent significantly more than 3% if them.

On the other hand, while his work on the Bible is famous, we know that Jefferson initially planned to do the same work from many ancient philosophers (especially the Greeks) and just didn't have the time. So arguing that it proves Jefferson's view Jesus' teaching as uniquely deserving of his attention is quite inaccurate...

So he took the time for Jesus, but Aristotle, Socrates, and Plato could wait.

On second thought he didn't like Plato.

DOC, if you aren't going to address the substantive posts, please do us a favor and just post jokes like everyone else.
