So this Christian Militia cult called "The Hutaree" was going to help kick-start the Rapture by doing some pretty f'd-up stuff. According to the reports I have read so far, they planned to make a fake 9-11 call then kill the officers who responded. Next, they would attack the officer's funnerals when lots of police personal were all together at once. I guess their thinking was something along the lines of: Jesus would be so impressed by what they did that he'd come down and get the Apocolypse going. To help Jesus fight the prophecized battle, they had been training for combat and learning to make powerful explosives.
It makes me wonder what they think the word "omnipotent" really means; why would an omnipotent figure need help?
What I find most disturbing about this incident is not the small group of nuts in the cult but the reaction that I have seen to it on various message boards, and not just Fox News type boards. Tons of the posts, maybe even the majority, have defended this group and even supported them. They try to act like it is all media spin trying to make the religious-right look bad. Many of the comments I have seen say things like, "How do they know it's a right-wing religious cult, maybe they are liberals!" (a left-wing religious cult, lol). They are accusing the media of being unfair to people protesting Obama and say that the left was worse to Bush (Bush started a war and the left protested peacefully, Obama wants to get health care for people who get sick, the right stockpiles weapons and makes death threats: seems comparable...). And those Tea Party signs that say "Bury Obama with Kennedy", I think we all know what that implies.
It always makes me laugh how the more people are into Jesus, the less they understand or care about what he taught. Jesus basically preached socialism, don't try to act like Jesus wants you to make sure people don't get health care unless they can afford it.
The thing that really scares me about this whole fiasco, however, is to see how easy it is for Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin to manipulate ignorant and potentially violent people. These kind of people are capable of doing some pretty twisted stuff when they get riled up and have that herd mentality that all laws no longer apply to them.
People like the fans of Mr. Randi who have some degree of rationality and intelligence are interested in facts; if you are for or against health care reform it will have to do with the risks vs. benefits and how much it will cost compared to the alternatives. The Fox News crowd, on the other hand (the people who can't tell the difference between socialism, communism, Nazis and fascism), are pretty much immune to logic and reason. For them, what matters is who yells the loudest and tells them there is some threat that is out to get them. And when people like that get worked up, it's not good.
These are the Timothy McVeigh type of people. I have often seen Christians asking "Where are the Christian suicide bombers?" to either defend Christianity and/or attack Islam. While I realize I might ironically sound a little like that paranoid Mormon (Beck) right now, I honestly wouldn't be suprised to see an American version of the Taliban start to emerge.
I live in Michigan not close but not too far from this Hutaree cult and I know the kind of people that join these militia groups and I see them getting more worked up all the time and these people have the capacity to be pretty dangerous.
