Except that is absolutely
NOT TRUE. See:
http://www.skunkhaven.net/StatesForm.htm
If you scroll to the bottom you will see that owning a skunk is illegal in every province in Canada (except N&L) where they are "
Legal with permit from Minister. Wildlife Regulations Sections 82, 83, 84, 85 and Schedule B. Schedual B does not include skunks, they are not native wildlife. They are not native or present in Newfoundland and as such a permit may be difficult to obtain." and NS where you should "
Refer to Department of Natural Resources Import Permits." as you need a permit to import one.
You can also note on that site that ownership of a skunk is illegal in the vast majority of the US states.
It took me less than five minutes to find this via Google.
Put |
pet skunk bite| into Google and you will get a few thousand hits telling you to be careful of your pet skunk because they bite everyone and everybody. You get an order of magnitude more hits with |
pet dog bite| which, considering the number of pet dogs vs pet skunks, is I suggest indicative of the relative dangers.
The extremely skunk friendly wikipedia article Pet_skunk
WP says: "
Although it is quite rare for domesticated skunks to get rabies, there have been many unfortunate cases in which an uninfected pet skunk bit a person, and then was euthanized by animal control personnel so that its brain cells could be tested for rabies." (
Bolding mine.)
I know what you say you are trying to do but picking on skunk ownership is not terribly clever because the legislation is not directed at skunks in particular and there are good reasons why they don't make good pets. As a conspiracy theory it fails on both counts.
