What Happens After I Die?

Kinda like 'Dam if i only get xx/x amount of years then nothing why bother, in the end nothing really matters'.

I've heard similar comments before and always puzzled why existing for eternity somehow makes life more meaningful?

Surely if one stops to think for a moment, instead of sucking in drivel from a pulpit, having an eternity must produce the "why bother?" not having a short, finite time.

If I knew I only had a month left to exist it would be an extremely busy month and everything would matter very much.

If I had an eternity - Why bother?

Also, the full horror of an eternity in any religion's afterlife seems to be something few of the religious ever contemplate.

"So what you going to do for the first 9 billion years?"

"Can you think of 100 million more things to do than you can in a good lifetime?"

"Yes?"

"OK, what about the next 9 billion years ... and the next... and the next... and the next... and the next... and the next... and the next ...?"

We would all be Wowbagger ... probably.

You snivelingly quisquous schizomaniac! ;)

I'd find an image of something a little "fresher" but I know how delicate the sensibilities are for some around here.

Seriously though, If you think we go through all this Joy & Pain with everything else in between and just cease to exist, that's pretty boring isn't it?

And existing forever in some afterlife ISN'T going to be boring after a while? (Especially if that afterlife means kissing your deity's ass forever.)

Not much reason to why you were born, to death, to the air we breathe, to the reason why there is so much space out there, everything..

Why does anything need a "reason?"

Kinda like 'Dam if i only get xx/x amount of years then nothing why bother, in the end nothing really matters'.

That's your "Dam" problem, not mine.

Far from it, i still enjoy and have pleasure with the pain as anyone else would if they didn't believe in the afterlife. In saying that i do things that feel right, always have since a kid.

Although you didn't feel that learning proper English grammar was "right."

IF YOU SPEAK OR WRITE COR-REC-TLY, THEN PEOPLE WILL UN-DER-STAND YOU.

If you feel like seeking out pleasure that is against the commandments and know it's wrong you probably don't want to believe in an afterlife so deny it cause you know what happens to you in the afterlife.

Ah, the existential threat! Do what my god tells you or he'll torture you after you die. Spoken like a true follower of Western civilization's favorite death cult.

sinners hate belief in the afterlife.

You sound like a fricken Scientologist when they are confronted with a critic: "What are your crimes! What are the crimes you've committed that makes you reject L. Ron Hubbard!"

Cults of a feather, I guess...

Unless you were bitten by a zombie. Then you would reanimate and mysteriously seek out living humans upon which to feast!

(Sorry, couldn't help myself. Just finished reading "The Zombie Survival Guide" - what a hoot)

Don't tempt me ;)

It would be funny if the page launched a program that shuts down your computer when you visit it.

When you die, the concept of you becoming the same as everything else, and thus nothing, begins infinitely.

Is this statement true? And if not, why isn't it?

Any replies would be appreciated ..

Absolutely NOT! You will either experience the most joy you ever felt as one of the redeemed and go on to heaven with Jesus for ever, or you will feel remorse and angwish in hell forever for denying his free gift of salvation. The good news is you still have time to accept Christ and live forever. Hell is very real people, and I don't wish that on anyone.

And if you do not believe the Bible, what can you believe? I choose to trust God and accept his word is true.

Jesus forever, how boring, is that the best thing you can think of.

Lots of books, and none having anything to do with any religion.

As a women, don't you think it is funny that you believe in a religion that thinks so little of women. All the books in that bible where not written by a woman. Your so-called god, a male, Jesus, a man, holy ghost, odds are male again.

That's definitely one party I wouldn't want to go to. I don't know what's worse, the entertainment or the guest list.

Some theists just don't understand that "An Eternity with Jesus" is not a compelling reason to place a wager.

If I told you, I'd have to kill you.
Oh that's perfect :)

I do not want to have to believe in a pamphlet designed several hundred years ago. There are many of those. EVEN IF THE BIBLE WERE "TRUE" it wouldn't be good enough for me because I want to meet the "inspiring author". And I'm not taking your word for it either based on your word alone. If Jesus is "very real" then show him to me. Or show me the real hell. SHOW ME something other than the pamphlet and your testimony.

Can you? I'm not trying to be mean ...

So your argument boils down to "I'm right because you think I'm wrong." That's kinda sad.

Remorse and anguish forever?

(What am I doing in this forum again?!) :-7

Have a look at this web page, KK: What The Bible Says About Sin, Judgment Day And Hell.

You might decide the Bible doesn't make hell sound as bad as that. At least not for nearly so many people. It quotes an article that says:

Code:
There might easily be types of "change" within hell, especially since entrance into the final state provokes at least some sorrow and grief. The rabbis of the time of Jesus (at least as explained through the Talmud) had an odd mixture of traditionalism, annihilationism, and a type of 'purgatory'. Cohen summarizes some of the main teachings in [i]Everyman's Talmud[/i] (Dutton): ...

"The locus classicus on the subject reads: 'The School of Shammai declared, There are three classes with respect to the Day of judgment: the perfectly righteous, the completely wicked, and the average people. Those in the first class are forthwith inscribed and sealed for eternal life. Those in the second class are forthwith inscribed and sealed for Gehinnom; as it is said, "Many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life and some to shame and everlasting contempt" (Dan. xii. 2). The third class will descend to Gehinnom and cry out (from the pains endured there) and then ascend; as it is said, " I will bring the third part through fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried; they shall call on My name and I will hear them" (Zech. xiii. 9). Concerning them Hannah said, "The Lord killeth and maketh alive, He bringeth down to Sheol and bringeth up" (i Sam. ii. 6). The School of Hillel quoted, "He is plenteous in mercy " (Exod. xxxiv. 6); He inclines towards mercy; and concerning them said David, " I love the Lord, because He hath heard my voice and my supplications" (Ps. cxvi. i). The whole of that Psalm was composed by David about them: "I was brought low and He saved me " (ibid. 6). The sinners of Israel with their bodies and the sinners of the Gentiles with their bodies descend
to Gehinnom and are judged there for twelve months. After twelve months their bodies are destroyed, and their souls burnt and scattered by a wind under
the soles of the feet of the righteous; as it is said, "Ye shall tread down the wicked, for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet" (Mal. iv.
3). But the sectaries, informers, epicureans who denied the Torah and denied the Resurrection, they who separated themselves from the ways of the community, they who set their dread in the land of the living, and they who, like Jeroboam the son of Nebat and his associates, sinned and caused the multitude to sin (cf. i Kings xiv. i6), will descend to Gehinnom and be judged there generations on generations; as it is said, "They shall go forth and look upon the carcasses of the men that have transgressed against Me; for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched" (Is. lxvi. 24). Gehinnom will cease but they will not cease (to suffer); as it is said, " Their form shall be for Sheol to consume that there be no habitation for it" (Ps. xlix. 14). Concerning them said Hannah, "They that strive with the Lord shall be broken to pieces" (i Sam. ii. i o). R. Isaac b. Abin said, Their faces will be black like the bottom of a pot' (R.H. 16b et seq.).

They were just interpreting Bible verses in a way that seemed to make sense to them. But these would have been scholars well-versed in the Bible, and if they came up with ideas like that, it seems to show that the Bible's teaching about hell isn't as clear as might be supposed.

See this article as well, for example, that contends that several Bible passages about hell have been misinterpreted/mistranslated, and that analysing the Greek words used shows that the Bible really speaks of temporary punishment that will purify people to make them fit for heaven: Is It ALL GREEK to You?

... While on the topic of "FIRE," let's consider another strong passage from Revelation.

REV 14:10"...he will be tormented with burning SULFUR in the PRESENCE of the holy angels and the Lamb"

In this verse we see the word "SULFUR" used for "tormenting" (punishing) those who follow the Beast. Also note that this is done in the PRESENCE of Jesus and not in some subterranean fire pit away from God. It is this PRESENSE of our holy God that causes their pain to be sure. So what is SULFUR? Well, in some Bibles it is translated "brimstone," but the Greek word here is "THEION" which can also be translated DIVINE as in something from God. Places that lightning touched were called "theia" and left a sulfurous smell. Also sulfur was used in purification ceremonies in that day by some outside of Judea. The real key here is that THEION is derived from THEOS which is GOD! Yes, THEOS is God in Greek and the word THEION comes directly from this Source. Consider this passage from Acts:

Act 17:29 "Being then the children of God, we ought not to think that the DIVINE Nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and thought of man."

The word translated here DIVINE is THEION which has been translated sulfur in other passages like in Revelation. The lake of Fire has a direct connection to the Divine because it comes from God. Not only is this a Divine Fire, but it is one that PURIFIES whatever it comes in contact with. ...

I don't know how accurate that article is, but it might mean the issues it raises could do with further investigation.

This is where the non-believer will tell you that they "do not need to believe in sky fairies and the afterlife to enjoy life and find meaning in it."

I think you are assuming that everyone must feel like you, and have to find a justification for being alive in order to go through the pain and find meaning in the pleasure everyday. This is definitely a philosophical quandry I think many people go through ... but I can tell you that at one point, I thought exactly this same way. So the belief in an afterlife and god "having a purpose" for me became a reality which I lived by and used.

But eventually, I saw I was hiding behind those things as an excuse to not experience the reality that was here and just take it at face value. Life is pleasure and pain and lots of other stuff. Finding meaning in it is rewarding and wonderful. But HAVING to have a meaning behind it can drive one to living on crutches when you can probably walk just fine without them. You can accept responsibility for the pain you cause and forgive others for the pain they inflict on you without having to justify them or yourself. It's just life. God doesn't have to arbritrate everything. Also, you can enjoy pleasure and love others and even sacrifice yourself for others and causes without feeling guilty or afraid and having to reasons to feel those things or not feel them. Regardless of what you believe, you will die one day as will all of us. That will be the culmination of the point. What happens after that doesn't have to determine how you live now.

And here is a thought ... if there is a god, would he eventually want you to make your own reality or always be enslaved or looking to a version of his or someone elses?

You can also create your own meaning and purpose. Since we're (apparently) the closest things to gods which exist, I almost feel it's our duty to.
On one hand, it seems that a meaning we create ourselves seems less "real", but if you think about it, the opposite is true, and taking the meaningless and creating meaning and purpose is what humans do. We take meaningless trees and rocks and transform them into homes. We take pointless boulders and transform them into art. We don't need imaginary skypeople to tell us how to do that, so why do we need imaginary skypeople to tell us what the meanings and purposes behind our finite lives are?

Just a head's up since you're new...these conversations do not go well. She's going to tell you to ask jesus into your heart and seek him and yada yada yada and then you'll see the truth and she won't have to show him to you because he'll show himself to you.
