Tam 8

I don't know about the busses out there, but when I went to NECSS I took a bus from Boston to NYC and it wasn't bad at all. Took about 5hrs (google maps says about the same time wise for LA to LV). The bus had an outlet in every seat and free wifi for the trip and was $30.

Considering the crap you have to deal with for airline travel, it's not all that bad.

You can also fly from LAX to Las Vegas for about US$120 including taxes on southwest airlines, as long as you avoid a Sunday return, which would increase the fare by about US$50

Registration is now open. Anyone going?

Just saw the update on Facebook. I'm really keen to go, but I'd prefer to wait a month or so to make sure I can get a cheap flight. They're up around $2000 at the moment. It's not likely to sell out, right?

Registration is now open, but what about scholarship applications?

V Australia appear to be the cheapest so far, but they've just listed their sale dates up until August, and The Amazing Meeting isn't within any of the sale travel periods. I know I'm a newbie and there are probably very good reasons for the chosen dates, but I'd really like to see TAM outside of peak season, so some of us from further away didn't have to pay so much to get there. :-(

Thanks for the heads up! I'll be registering soon for my first TAM! :)

It looks like they made an active effort to recruit more female speakers this year. Karen Stollznow, Carol Tavris, Jennifer Michael Hecht, Maria Walters (Masala Skeptic on Skepchick), and others...plus a Feminist Skepticism workshop. Makes me happy!

The trouble is that your peak season is the lowest season in Vegas, so there's built-in conflict...

I didn't know that. I presumed that because it was summer, that was the busy time of year. Thanks for the info!

Anyone wanna recommend some cheap ways to get to Vegas from LA?

As others have mentioned carpool (definitely the cheapest) and bus. I would also like to throw out the possibility of train. Not sure what the rates are, but check out Amtrack for rates and schedules. It is at least worth the time it would take to check out thier website to see if its a viable option.

Remember, Vegas is known for being hot and dry. Summer can get up to 120F (40C), not ideal weather to promote tourism. It will actually be busy the weekend before TAM despite that due to being a 3-day weekend and national holiday (July 4th - US independence)

I am actually coming in early (flying in on the 4th) to visit friends (I used to live in LV). When do early arrivers generally start discussing plans to meet for casual pre TAM stuff?

Will there be somewhere to store children, or should I bring a huge bag of quarters and place the kids on the slots?

As a serious answer, many of the off-strip casinos have a Kids-Quest or similar franchise located on site. Check with South Pointe to see if they do and what the rates would be (It may actually be cheaper to give your kids quarters and sit them down at the slots)

I know for a fact that they do have a movie theatre and bowling alley on the premises, so those may be options as well.

cwalner was much more expansive about it than I was going to be: I was just going to say that you would understand why it's "off season" after you'd been there!

I will further add this reccomendation. If you plan on spending ANY time outdoors, bring sunblock. (ETA and water - ie get some bottles from the casino before you leave)

To further extrapolate, I will add this anecdote. When I frist moved to LV (10 years ago in late May) I recall getting up for work the first day. I walked outside at 7:30 am. It was about 85F. For those outside the US, most would consider this an ideal temperature for a warm summer afternoon. In July, I would not expect nightime lows to drop below 80F

Yeah. The last time I was in Vegas was in September, and at midnight it was 106F! It was probably close to that 120F mark mentioned during the day; I wouldn't know, I tried not to go outside at the same time the sun was up.

Well, it is the desert, right near the peak of summer...

As a liker of chicks, it makes me happy too. :)

Summer for Vegas is the off season. Basically because it is a million degrees, and not very pleasant. Most people go in the winter to escape the cold weather where they live.

Some will be there as early as Tuesday. A lot of "forum veterans" arrive on Wed, which is when the bar will start getting crowded, and pretty much everyone is there by Thursday.
