Australia

Oh, okay.

Actually, my state flag has the union jack in the upper left field as well. That's why I consider myself an honorary Australian...we have that similarity in history together: we were both screwed over by the English.

What state? Piccies and info please.

I hope all agree that a little speel from an honorary Aussie on where you're from, would not be out of place in this thread from an honorary Aussie.

:)

eta: I know Hawaii - but are there states within the state?

MG1962 handled the graphics portion of the lecture, thankyouverymuch. :D

(This will not be a Kingly lecture, complete with pictures with circles and arrows, and a paragraph on the back of each one. Sorry.)

As far as why Hawai'i honors the English in their flag, I'm not really sure. Why they shouldn't: the royalty here turned to England for assistance when the sugar barons were actively overthrowing the monarchy, and England decided Hawai'i was too far away, and there were few financial gains anticipated. So the Queen was imprisoned, and the United States was convinced to annex the territory.

And the founding Senators chose to memorialize the event by putting the union jack in the field of our flag.

(Excellent guess, Lolly! What gave you your first clue? ;) )

As to why the Union Jack is in the state flag, the story I heard was that it dates back to Kamehameha I and his gratitude for British help in his conquest of the Islands. Since the flag already had a relatively long history and tradition with the Islands, they didn't bother to change it when Hawai'i became part of the US.

I was actually suprised more people were not aware of the relationship between the Union Jack and Hawaii

So....thinking this through....Obama, is not Kenyan, but actually British. Could this be the first step in the empire regaining its former colonies?

Geeze, I turn my back for 5 minutes to go and poke sticks at the Neo-Nachos and Coconut deniers, and everyone posts here :)

String of 'responses' coming right up after coffeeeeeez!

Cheers, Cobbers and Cobberettes.

Pardon me,The Union Flag is the correct name. Pedant mode off.

I seem to remember more about Australia than I thought, doing a readup about the whole Gallipoli mess. Seems to have made a lasting impact on you guys.

Have a look at this thread from mid-April last year. I wrote heaps of articles about ANZAC.

Yes, Gallipoli shaped a lot of the modern Australian psyche. It was a coming of age, in many ways.

One effect of it is that Johnny Turk became our greatest mate, and still is. I consider them my brothers, just as I do the Kiwis. The world could learn a lesson from that, I think, but hasn't yet.
